Dietrich Bierlein (born August 14, 1928 in Burglengenfeld ; † January 6, 2015 in Regensburg ) was a German mathematician who was particularly concerned with mathematical stochastics .

Life

From 1949 to 1954 Bierlein studied at the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich and at the University of Cologne . In 1954 he received his diploma in mathematics in Munich; In 1955 he received his doctorate from Robert Schmidt with the dissertation "Optimal methods for sum approximation in Jecklin's F-method". From 1956 to 1962 he was Hans Richter's research assistant at the LMU Munich, where he completed his habilitation in 1961 with the thesis “On the continuation of probability fields”.

After acting as professor at the Universities of Münster (SS 1962) and Göttingen (WS 1962/63), he was ord. Professor of Mathematics and Director of the Institute for Mathematical Statistics at the TH / University of Karlsruhe . In 1970 he followed a call to an ord. Professorship for mathematics, especially mathematical statistics, at the University of Regensburg . He worked there until his retirement in 1996.

The main focus of Bierlein’s scientific work was on the one hand dimensional continuation problems and on the other hand statistical decision theory and mathematical game theory . In particular, he encouraged developments in safeguard systems.

His students include Bernd Goldstein, Heinrich Hering, Jürgen Lehn , Hartmut Noltemeier, Burkhard Rauhut and Horst Stenger.
