Dietrich Garstka (* 1939 in Berlin ; † April 18, 2018 ) was a German lecturer and author of a book.

Life

Garstka attended a school in Storkow until he and many of his classmates fled the GDR to West Berlin . After graduating from high school, he studied German , sociology and geography in Cologne and Bochum and was a high school teacher in Essen and Krefeld . Until his death he was a lecturer at the Volkshochschule Essen in the field of art and culture.

In 2006 Garstka published his book The Silent Classroom at Ullstein Verlag . In it he logs the dramatic events during which his high school graduation class came into conflict with the highest positions in the GDR state apparatus on the occasion of the 1956 Hungarian popular uprising . Based on the book by Garstka, the film of the same name was made in 2017, directed by Lars Kraume . The film had its world premiere on February 20, 2018 at the Berlinale in the Berlinale Special section . Almost two months later, Garstka died after a long and serious illness.
