Dietrich I. (bar)

Dietrich I. (* around 965; † between April 11, 1026 and January 2, 1027) was Count von Bar and Duke of Upper Lorraine . He was the son of Friedrich I von Bar and Oberlothringen and Beatrix von Franzien , a sister of Hugo Capet .

He followed his father in 978 under his mother's reign, which lasted until 987. In 985 he stood together with other Lorraine barons, including his cousin Gottfried the Prisoner , Count of Verdun , against the French King Lothar , when he besieged Verdun , where he himself was taken prisoner.

He was a loyal follower of the Ottonian emperors. In 1011 he fought for Henry II against his relatives from the county of Luxembourg . In 1018 he was captured again in Burgundy , where he finally succeeded in defeating the invaders Odo II of Blois , Count of Meaux and Troyes . In 1019 he involved his son Friedrich II in the government of the duchy. In 1024, after the death of Emperor Heinrich II, he opposed his successor Conrad II , but then switched sides and recognized the new ruler. In 1026 his son Friedrich II died, so that with Dietrich's death the duchy immediately passed on to his grandson Friedrich III. passed over.

He married Richilde around 985, probably a daughter of Folmar I, Count of Lunéville and Metz ; their children included:
