Dietrich Thomas (* 1974 in Münster ) is a German jazz pianist , choir director and teacher.

Thomas studied church music from 1993 to 1998 at the Cologne University of Music , where he was a student of Ilana Schapira (piano) and Margareta Hürholz . He completed his studies with the A-exam . After a time as cantor of the Evangelical Parish of Rösrath , he studied school music at the Cologne University of Music from 2000 to 2005, majoring in jazz piano (with Hans Lüdemann ) and also German and pedagogy at the Universities of Cologne and Bonn. He was then a student trainee for German and music at the Humboldt-Gymnasium Cologne and has been teaching at the Otto-Kühne-Schule in Bonn since 2009 .

Thomas has been working as a freelance musician since 1999. He worked as a theater and stage musician, including the performance of the musical Saturday Night Fever in the Cologne Musical Dome (2000–01), the play Der zerbrochne Krug by Kleist at the Schauspielhaus Düsseldorf (2003–05) and the multimedia play The wonderful life of Enzo Grillo by Isidoro Fernandez (as a live electronics engineer, 2005) with. Since 2005 he has also composed several pieces of music for documentaries and multimedia applications.

From 2000 to 2003 Thomas was a member of the Kölsch rock group Hätz (with Hans Heres , Norbert Scholly , Daniel Speer , Heiko Glauch ) and belonged to the ensemble of chanson singer Margaux Kier (with David Plate and Daniel Speer). Between 2003 and 2005 he worked with the improvisation theater Frizzles . Since 2003 he has been a member of the Verena Guido Trio alongside Stefan Döring .

Dietrich Thomas has directed the jazz choir of the University of Cologne since 2007 , and has also been involved in the annual productions of Cäcilia Wolkenburg as a repetitor, assistant choir director and orchestral pianist since 2001 . Since 2007 he has also appeared regularly as a stage musician in staged readings with the actors and actresses Rudolf Kowalski and Eva Scheurer .
