Digby Marritt Jones, Baron Jones of Birmingham Kt (* 28. October 1955 in Birmingham ) is a British lawyer , business leaders and politicians of the Labor Party , which since 2007 Peer Life Member of the House of Lords is.

Life

Solicitor and Manager

After attending school, Jones completed a law degree at University College London (UCL) and joined the law firm Edge & Ellison Solicitors in 1978 , becoming an assistant solicitor in 1980 before becoming an associate partner in 1981. In 1980 he became a member of the Law Society. He has been a partner in the firm since 1984 and head of corporate affairs since 1987. He also became Senior Associate Partner in 1990 and was Senior Partner of Edge & Ellison Solicitors between 1995 and 1998.

Then Jones from 1998 to 1999, Vice-President for Corporate Finance of KPMG , and between 2000 and 2006 General of the employers' association Confederation of British Industry (CBI). He was also a member of the Racial Equality Commission from 2002 to 2007 and Director of VisitBritain from 2003 to 2005 and a member of the National Council on Learning and Skills from 2003 to 2006. Jones, who was ennobled as a Knight Bachelor in 2005 and henceforth the suffix "Sir", has been a senior advisor to Deloitte since 2006 and was government commissioner for skills between 2006 and 2007.

House of Lords

By a letters patent dated July 10, 2007, Jones was raised to life peer as Baron Jones of Birmingham , of Alvechurch and of Bromsgrove in the County of Worcestershire. Shortly thereafter, he was introduced as a member of the House of Lords . In the upper house, he initially belongs to the Labor Party faction , but switched to the so-called Crossbencher group on October 3, 2008 . Meanwhile, from June 29, 2007 to October 3, 2008, he served as Secretary of State for Trade and Investment in the Department of Commerce, Enterprise and Regulatory Reform in Prime Minister Gordon Brown's administration .

Later activities

After leaving government, Jones returned to numerous roles in the private sector and is currently chairman of Triumph Motorcycles Limited and a member of the Royal British Legion .

Jones, who is the patron of Women Fighting Breast Cancer, is Vice President of Birmingham Hospice and UNICEF . He is also a member of the Development Board of the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra . Jones is a Fellow of University College London (2004) and an honorary doctorate from the University of Central England (2002). He is an honorary member of various British universities.
