Dimetridazole (trade name chevi-col ) is an antibiotic from the nitroimidazole group . In Germany it is approved for the treatment of carrier pigeons against yellow button (infestation with Trichomonas gallinae ), the use in food-producing animals is prohibited. The active ingredient can also be used in other birds to combat trichomonads and Giardia intestinalis . It can also be used for trichomonads and giardia infections of small pets ( guinea pigs , chinchillas , rabbits ) and infections with Entamoeba invadens in reptiles .

The maximum plasma concentration is reached in fasting pigeons after 1 and in fed pigeons after 2.3 hours. The plasma half-life is 3.9 hours. The bioavailability in fasting animals is 83.8%. The main metabolite is 1-methyl-5-nitroimidazol-2-ylmethyl hydrogen sulfate, which, however, probably has no activity against Trichomonas gallinae . The active ingredient and its metabolites are excreted in the urine, feces and exhaled air.
