Dimitrios Pandermalis ( Greek Δημήτριος Παντερμαλής , born 1940 in Thessaloniki ) is a Greek classical archaeologist .

Pandermalis first studied history, classical archeology and German studies at the University of Thessaloniki and after graduating in 1965 continued his studies in classical archeology at the University of Freiburg im Breisgau . There he received his doctorate in 1968 with Walter-Herwig Schuchhardt with the thesis Investigations on the classic strategist heads .

He then became an assistant at the Museum of Plaster Casts of the University of Thessaloniki, where he held lectures from 1969. Initially assistant professor, he was appointed to the chair of Classical Archeology at the University of Thessaloniki in 1979. In addition to the teaching, in which he covered the subject comprehensively, he led the excavations in Dion from 1973 .

Pandermalis' commitment goes far beyond its subject and is both culturally and politically oriented. He was president of the State Theater of Northern Greece, he is honorary president of the international foundation "Alexander the Great" and the "Telloglion Art Foundation". As Thessaloniki 1997 European Capital of Culture was curated Pandermalis the exhibition Alexander the Great and the East ( "Alexander the Great and the East"). In 2004 he was the curator of the New York exhibition Alexander the Great for the Alexander Onassis Foundation . Treasures from an Epic Era of Hellenism ("Alexander the Great. Treasures of an Epic Period of Hellenism"). His political engagement led him to the Greek Parliament from 1996 to 2000 . In 1999 he was elected Chairman of the Committee on Affairs of the Greeks Abroad .

The Greek cabinet under Konstantinos Simitis gave him in 2000 the management of the organizing committee for the construction of decades in the planning process plug forming new Acropolis Museum . The new building was completed in 2007, and Pandermalis was appointed director of the museum in 2009.

Dimitrios Pandermalis is a member of the Archaeological Society of Athens and the German Archaeological Institute .
