Dinklageodoxa scandens is the only species of the plant genus Dinklageodoxa withinthe trumpet tree family (Bignoniaceae). It is endemic to Liberia and only occurs near Monrovia .

Vegetative characteristics

Dinklageodoxa scandens is a liana . The shoot axes are bare. The opposite leaves are arranged unpaired feathery. The leaf blade consists of one to two pairs of leaflets . The leaflets are long-elliptical with a length of 7 to 18 centimeters and a width of 2.5 to 6 centimeters.

Generative characteristics

The terminal inflorescences are thyrsenic , which contain bracts and ten to twenty flowers. The flower stalk is 7 to 9 millimeters long.

The hermaphrodite flowers are five-fold with a double flower envelope . The five sepals are fused bell-shaped. The tubular to bell-shaped crown is white, the base is lavender on the outside and purple lines and dots on the inside; it is two-lipped. The four stamens do not protrude beyond the crown. The dust bags are bare and have two straight bars. There is a staminodium present. The discus is egg-shaped. The upper permanent ovary is elliptical, bare and includes a plurality of ovules .

Ripe fruits of this kind are unknown.

Occurrence

The endemic Dinklageodoxa scandens occurs only near Monrovia in Liberia . There it grows as a liana in trees of the coastal savannahs .

Systematics

The genus Dinklageodoxa was established in 1962 with the first description of the species Dinklageodoxa scandens by Hermann Heino Heine and Noel Yvri Sandwith in A New Genus of Bignoniaceae from Liberia in Kew Bulletin , Volume 16, Issue 2, pages 223-226 (Figures 1 and 2). The generic name Dinklageodoxa honors the German merchant Max Julius Dinklage (1864–1935), who collected plants in Liberia. The specific epithet scandens means "climbing". Synonyms for Dinklageodoxa scandens Heine & Sandwith are: Kigelia dinklagei Aubrév. & Pellegr. , Dinklageanthus volubilis Melch. ex Dinkl. & Mildbr.

Dinklageodoxa scandens is the only species of the genus Dinklageodoxa that belongs to the tribe Tecomeae within the family Bignoniaceae .
