Dinnies from the east

Dinnies von der Osten (* around 1414 ; † May 4, 1477 ) was a Pomeranian knight and military leader. In the family history he is nicknamed "the wise man" (or "the white knight"), without a known reason for this name.

Life

Dinnies von der Osten came from the noble family von der Osten, who lived in Western Pomerania on Woldenburg and Plathe . His parents were Heinrich the Younger from the East († 1421) and Ursula von Tessen .

He learned the craft of war and in 1436 became governor on Gotland under Erich von Pomerania . Later he entered the service of King Friedrich IV for several years and was in 1452 on the occasion of his coronation by Emperor Friedrich III. knighted.

In 1460 he was appointed governor of Neumark . In the 1460s there were violent disputes between Bishop Henning Iven and the city of Kolberg in the diocese of Cammin . Dinnies von der Osten led the 1200 to 1600 strong troops of the bishop and his allied Duke Erich II over the frozen Persante at night on December 21, 1462 . However, the surprise attack failed, although some of the teams had already climbed the city wall near the mill gate, and was repulsed. Dinnies von der Osten then had the town villages destroyed. In return, the people of Kolberg burned their possessions in the east and besieged his stronghold in Woldenburg. Only the mediation of the Pomeranian cities led to an armistice. Dinnies von der Osten did not make peace with Kolberg until 1475, while the Bishop of Cammin and the Duke had already reached an agreement with the city between 1466 and 1468.

In 1469 he led the delegation of Pomerania to peace negotiations in Petrikau . In the same year he donated the house of his deceased son, located in Stettiner Domstrasse opposite St. Mary's Church, to the Jageteufel Foundation . This remained the seat of the foundation until the 20th century.

Dinnies von der Osten was married to Anna von Brüsewitz († around 1469) for the first time and to Sophie von Plessen for the second time . His son Ewald von der Osten (1455–1533) comes from his first marriage.
