Dirk Scalongne (born December 12, 1879 in Amsterdam , † April 1, 1973 ibid) was a Dutch fencer and Schout-bij-Nacht .
Life
Dirk Scalongne took part in the 1912 Olympic Games in Stockholm , where he reached the finals with the Dutch team. He finished this together with Jetze Doorman , Arie de Jong , Hendrik de Iongh , George van Rossem and Willem van Blijenburgh in third place behind Hungary and Austria and thus won the bronze medal. After the outbreak of World War I , he ended his fencing career.
At the age of 18, Scalongne joined the Royal Navy and was stationed in the Dutch East Indies , where he started fencing. In 1907 he became one of the first commanders of the first Dutch submarine, the O1 . During his military career, he held several submarine commands in Den Helder and Surabaya . In 1934 he retired from active service with the rank of rear admiral .
