The Tarapoto district is located in the department of San Martín in the region San Martin in northern Peru . The district has an area of 58.4 km². At the 2017 census there were 76,122 residents in the district. In 1993 the population was 54,581, in 2007 68,295. The district administration is located in the provincial capital Tarapoto, 333 m high on the Río Cumbaza , with 74,804 inhabitants (as of 2017). In the south of the city of Tarapoto is the airport ( Aeropuerto Comandante FAP Guillermo del Castillo Paredes ).
Geographical location
The Tarapoto district is located in a basin landscape in the eastern Andes in the province of San Martín. The Río Cumbaza, left tributary of the Río Mayo , flows through the southwest of the district. Its left tributary Río Shilcayo runs along the eastern district boundary between Tarapoto and La Banda .
The Tarapoto district is bordered to the west by the district Morales , in the northwest of the district of San Antonio , on the east by the district La Banda de Shilcayo and the south by the district Juan Guerra .
