The district of La Banda de Shilcayo is located in the province of San Martín in the San Martín region of northern Peru . The district has an area of ​​286.68 km². In the 2017 census, 43,481 people lived in the district. In 1993 the population was 13,558, in 2007 29,111. The district administration is located in the city of La Banda with 36,201 inhabitants (as of 2017). La Banda forms the southeastern part of the metropolitan area of ​​the provincial capital Tarapoto and is about 700 m from the city center.

Geographical location

The district of La Banda de Shilcayo is located in a basin landscape in the eastern Andes in the province of San Martín. The longitudinal extent in NW-SE direction is about 30 km and a maximum width of 22 km. The Río Cumbaza , left tributary of the Río Mayo , flows through the southwest of the district. A mountain range of the Peruvian Eastern Cordillera runs through the east of the district.

The district La Banda de Shilcayo bordered to the west by the District of Tarapoto , in the northwest of the district of San Antonio , on the north by the district Caynarachi ( province Lamas ), to the east by the districts Barranquita (also in the province of Lamas) and Chazuta and in South to the Shapaja and Juan Guerra districts .
