Djinn - Demons of the Desert (also marketed under the name Stranded ) is a French action and horror film directed by the couple Hugues Martin and Sandra Martin. Grégoire Leprince-Ringuet , Saïd Taghmaoui , Cyril Raffaelli and Aurélien Wiik play the leading roles.

action

The action takes place in early 1960 during the Algerian War in Algeria . A group of French soldiers led by Durieux is on a rescue mission in the middle of the desert trying to rescue the crew of a crashed French Air Force aircraft . When they arrive at the plane, they find a suitcase that is sealed. The rescuers are caught in an ambush by the Algerian rebels , from which they can fight their way out except for one death. At night, the young and sensitive soldier Michel sees strange phenomena, but goes to sleep again, believing that he has succumbed to an optical illusion.

The group reaches a village whose Arab residents are rounded up by them; a young woman is accidentally shot by Max. Michel captures the rebels outside the village. While interrogating the rebels, the French murder one of them. At night Michel gets up again and sees three demons approaching him. The Algerian girl who had been killed appears to one of the soldiers and speaks to him. At the same time, one of the injured French soldiers stands up as if by remote control and tries to murder the superior, but can be shot just in time. Shortly thereafter, Max suffers a fit of madness, whereupon he is shot by a comrade in self-defense. The next day the men debate whether or not to leave. The sadistic Vacard begins again to torture the captured rebels with beatings and mock executions. The situation is also escalating among each other. There are beatings, insults and refusal to give orders.

An old woman from the village warns Michel that the cause is jinn , demons of the desert, which the soldiers will no longer allow the soldiers to leave. He should seek shelter in the mosque at night .

The soldiers stay in the village one more night. Vacard, meanwhile, suffers from memories of his imprisonment during the Indochina War . There he had murdered his injured comrade Martinez because he had screamed too loud in pain. When he wakes up, he is paranoid and threatens Durieux. This in turn is tormented by the demons with shrill tones. Later, one of the younger soldiers has to kill his superior in self-defense when he tries to murder him. Michel takes his injured comrade with him and tries to reach the mosque. Durieux comes to a terrible end and one of the comrades hunts down demon-possessed Michel, who finds shelter with locals. Michel manages to shoot his comrade. Vacard tries to murder Michel, but is killed by one of the rebels who had freed himself in the meantime.

The next morning - there are only two French left - Michel decides to stay with the Algerians. His comrade tries to return alone with the suitcase. When the latter came back under French rule, a colonel told him that there was no village in the area in question. The suitcase containing the order to carry out the French nuclear weapons tests in the Algerian desert is forwarded. At the end of the film, Michel and the villagers witness the detonated bomb on February 12, 1960.
