The Great Dane Shag ( Hippoglossoides platessoides ) is a common flatfish from the northern Atlantic. It occurs around the British Isles , in the North Sea , in Skagerrak and Kattegat , along the coast of Norway , to the southern Barents Sea and the White Sea as well as in the Faroe Islands , near Iceland , on the southwest coast of Greenland and around Newfoundland .

There are two subspecies: H. p. platessoides in the northwest Atlantic and H. p. limandoides in the northeast Atlantic.

features

The Great Dane Shear has an elongated, asymmetrical, laterally strongly flattened body. The mouth is large and reaches below the right eye. The dorsal fin begins above the left eye. The lateral line organ is almost straight, the scales rough. Great Dane shags rarely grow longer than 40 centimeters, the largest recorded length was 82.6 centimeters.

Way of life

Great Dane shags live on soft soils, at depths of 90 to 250 meters, at temperatures of -0.5 to 2.5 ° C. They feed on sea urchins , brittle stars , worms, crustaceans and small fish and are themselves the prey of rays , cod , ling and halibut .

Reproduction

In almost the entire range, the fish spawn in spring, at depths of 100 to 200 meters. 50,000 to 300,000 eggs are laid, which are pelagic and 2 to 3 mm in diameter. The approximately 5 mm long larvae hatch after two weeks. With a length of 20 to 30 mm, the initially pelagic larvae move on to soil life. The animals of the North Sea become sexually mature after 2 to 3 years with a length of 15 to 20 centimeters. The Arctic Great Dane Shags grow much more slowly.

use

Great Dane meat is watery and is mainly processed into fish meal .
