Building history

Print of the interior from 1890

The main church of the city of Carignano is dedicated to Saints John the Baptist and Remigius of Reims .

In 1755, the local council decided to demolish the previous Gothic church from 1484 and build a new one. The baroque building was built between 1757 and 1767 according to plans by the Savoy court architect Benedetto Alfieri .

Building description

The church has a unique floor plan : the nave is laid out as a segment of a circle, while the choir is traditionally designed. Despite the transverse tendency of the building, it is a longitudinal church . The wide main facade of the church is remarkable. The central part is concave and flanked by two risalits . The main portal is part of a two-story temple front with a large oculus window . The side campanile with onion helmet is visually receding from the main facade.

The high altar and the sculptures in the interior are by Giuseppe Bottinelli .
