Domenico Cubelles ( Spanish Domingo Cubels ; * 1497 in Caspe , † November 22, 1566 in Malta ) was a Spanish Roman Catholic clergyman and bishop of Malta .

Life

The Spaniard Domingo Cubels was conventual chaplain of the Order of Malta and grand prior of the convent church of St. Laurentius in Birgu . Emperor Charles V (HRR) , who was also King of Spain, proposed him for the diocese of Malta as bishop, Pope Paul III. then appointed Cubels on December 10, 1540 Bishop of Malta. With the Bulle Licet ab Initio he was appointed on July 15, 1562 by Pope Pius IV as the first inquisitor of the Roman Inquisition in Malta. Domenico Cubelles proclaimed the beginning of the Roman Inquisition on the Maltese Islands in 1562 . From Birgu he headed the Inquisition in Malta until the siege of 1565 , under which all activities of the Inquisition were interrupted.

He remained Bishop of Malta until his death.
