Life
Dominik Oesterreicher came from a Moravian merchant family. After studying painting in Vienna and Italy , he worked at the court of the Polish King Stanislaus II August Poniatowski in Warsaw. During his studies he had already met the influential theologian and politician Hugo Kołłątaj , who was a representative of the Polish Enlightenment . In 1777 he had offered him a professorship for painting in Kraków, which he only took over in 1782 after Hugo Kołłątaj had become rector there.
In addition to his teaching activities, Dominik Oesterreicher created pictures of religious and historical content that are in the collections of Collegium Maius (Cracow) and the Cracow Society of Friends of the Fine Arts. He also dealt with lepidopterology .
Dominik Oesterreicher was married to Rosalie, née Prakesch. The marriage had twelve children, only two of whom reached adulthood: daughter Klara and son Alois , botanist and professor and rector of Kraków University.
