Donatus Kaufmann

Donatus Bernhard Kaufmann (born August 11, 1962 in Basel ) is a Swiss manager. From February 1, 2014 to September 30, 2019, Kaufmann was a member of the Executive Board of the industrial and technology group Thyssenkrupp and was responsible for the areas of technology, innovation, digital transformation, sustainability, law and compliance. In addition, he was responsible for the North America and Western Europe regions at the Dax Group.

Education and career

education

Kaufmann studied law, history and political science at the Georg-August-Universität Göttingen , Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität Bonn and the University of Paris IV . In 1987 he graduated as "Licencié d'Histoire" at the Sorbonne. In 1991 he passed the first state examination in Düsseldorf and the second state examination in 1996 in Hamburg and was admitted to the bar. In 1995 Kaufmann received his doctorate in international business law in Hamburg . In 1998 he completed a one-year business administration course at the FernUniversität Hagen in cooperation with Siemens and BMW, and in 2009 he completed an international executive program at the private business school Insead .

Career

Vebacom and o.tel.o
Kaufmann began his professional career in the telecommunications industry in the course of the liberalization and privatization of the German telecommunications market. From 1996 to 1999 he was legal advisor and regulatory advisor at the VEBA subsidiary Vebacom GmbH and o.tel.o communications GmbH & Co., which was created in 1997 through the merger of Vebacom and RWE Telliance .

Esprit Telecom and Global TeleSystems (GTS) In
1999, Kaufmann switched to the British Esprit Telecom Group, which was taken over by the US telecommunications group GobalTeleSystems (GTS) in the same year . The aim of the merger was to expand the position in the European telecommunications market with large business customers and medium-sized companies. Until 2002, Kaufmann was in charge of legal, regulation and contract management at the German GTS subsidiary, Global TeleSystems (Deutschland) GmbH in Düsseldorf. He was also a member of the German management team at GTS. Kaufmann obtained for GTS on the German telecommunications market, which had been liberalized since 1996, against the then dominant Deutsche Telekom from the regulatory authority for telecommunications and post (now the Federal Network Agency ) that the network interconnection and access to the last mile (house connections) for the then young competitors was regulated in a competitive manner. Until then, the interconnection conditions were unilaterally issued by Deutsche Telekom.

Boehringer Ingelheim In
2002, Kaufmann switched to the pharmaceutical company Boehringer Ingelheim . Until the beginning of 2011 he worked there in various management positions with global responsibility. Among other things, he was Group General Counsel and Chief Compliance Officer. He also managed the family office of the Boehringer and von Baumbauch families.

Metro AG
In February 2011, Kaufmann became chief lawyer and chief compliance officer of the Metro Group. Among other things, Kaufmann expanded the compliance work there and, against the resistance of the minority shareholder Erich Kellerhals, implemented a new governance structure at the subsidiary Media-Saturn , which secured extensive rights for Metro AG . Most recently, he was Head of Corporate Special Projects and Executive Advisor to the Management Board.

Thyssenkrupp
At the beginning of February 2014, Kaufmann was appointed to the Executive Board by the Thyssenkrupp AG Supervisory Board after a series of corruption and cartel allegations against the group with a focus on law and compliance. He was also responsible for the areas of technology, innovations, digital transformation and sustainability as well as the regions of North America and Western Europe. As part of the upcoming strategic and structural realignment of Thyssenkrupp, Kaufmann left the group on September 30, 2019.

Private

Kaufmann is married, has three children and lives in Krefeld . He is a member of the Corps Bremensia Göttingen and the Corps Palatia Bonn .
