Life

Kellerhals opened a specialist shop for bicycles, oil stoves, stoves, radios and televisions in Ingolstadt in 1963 - together with his wife Helga. The company expanded under the name “FEG Kellerhals” and had five branches in Bavaria with a growing range of products. In 1968 Leopold Stiefel got on board .

When the hypermarkets came up in the mid-1970s , the three people thought about a new form of distribution. Kellerhals had the entrepreneurial experience, contacts and the necessary risk capital. On November 24, 1979, they opened the first Media Markt in the Euro-Industriepark in Munich . The number of employees rose from 15 to 140 in the first year. He ran the business. His wife was initially responsible for administration and accounting. Stiefel was responsible for purchasing and sales and Walter Gunz , a former Karstadt employee, was responsible for marketing.

When the company wanted to expand faster nine years after it started, Kaufhof was granted a 54% stake in 1990 , which the subsidiary Saturn Hansa brought into the company. Kellerhals retained a 21% stake in Media Markt, which is, however, associated with a right of veto on all important decisions. As of November 14, 2011, the shareholdings of the shareholders in Media Saturn Holding GmbH were as follows:

  • Metro AG : 75.41%
  • Convergenta Invest GmbH - Shareholders are the Kellerhals family: 21.62%, but the participation was provided as with a half participation.
  • Family boots: 2.97%.

In January 2013, Leopold Stiefel announced that his family was selling their share to Metro AG. The shares of the Kellerhals family continue to amount to 21.6%.

Since the 1960s, the Kellerhals have also dealt with real estate (commercial and residential properties as well as shopping centers and hotels). It owns a large inventory of land. The construction of a shopping center is planned in Ingolstadt. A shopping center was expanded in St. Pölten in Austria.

His son Jürgen Kellerhals also rents out commercial properties and operates hotels. His place of business is in Ingolstadt. His grandson Julian Kellerhals also joined the family business.

In July 1997, a group of investors led by Kellerhals and Peter Amberger took over Möbel Unger in order to convert it into a decentralized retail concept. After the reorganization failed and Unger had to file for bankruptcy, the creditors' dispute dragged on - including allegations against Kellerhals - until January 2005.

In 1999, Kellerhals founded a non-profit foundation for promoting training in retail and in 2000 the Erich-Kellerhals-Foundation, which is active in the cultural sector. In Salzburg he and his wife owned Convergenta Invest und Beteiligungs GmbH, which is also represented in Bad Wiessee .
