Leopold Stiefel (born February 19, 1945 in Braunau am Inn , Austria ) is a leading founder of the Media Markt electronics chain and is a German entrepreneur and was most recently a minority owner of the Media-Saturn Holding with 2.97% .

Professional background

After graduating from elementary school in 1959, Stiefel completed an apprenticeship as a retail salesman at the Ingolstadt electrical trading company Dreyer & Schnetzer, where he worked as a salesman from 1960. From 1964 to 1968 he was consultant and department manager at J. Fröschl & Co . He then worked for the Ingolstadt-based company FEG Kellerhals, a specialist retailer for television and electrical appliances with five branches, and rose to become managing director and partner there in 1979 when Media Markt was founded .

Together with the FEG owner Erich Kellerhals, in his time at FEG Kellerhals, in which the then new self-service department stores successfully pushed into the market and specialist dealers took market shares, he developed the concept for a large-scale electronics store, which was initially ridiculed even by the banks urban outskirts. Back then, the industry was characterized by small specialist dealers with a manageable selection, including FEG Kellerhals at the time. In 1979, together with the married couple Helga and Erich Kellerhals , who had been trading oil stoves, electrical appliances and bicycles in Ingolstadt since 1963, and with the advertising specialist and former Karstadt employee Walter Gunz, the first Media Markt was founded and opened in Munich .

On December 31, 2006, he resigned as managing director of Media-Saturn-Holding for health reasons , but was subsequently given a consultancy contract until the end of 2008. Bootel's relationship with the Kellerhals and Walter Gunz is now considered tense.

In 2011, Stiefel, together with Erich Kellerhals, filed a lawsuit against Metro AG , which is the main owner of Media-Saturn-Holding with around 75% . The Metro AG proposed by a newly established advisory board to overturn the blocking minority, which attributable to the two founders, despite minority interest due to the shareholder agreements.

In January 2013, Leopold Stiefel announced that his family was selling their share to Metro AG. The purchase price was around EUR 230 million.
