The Donghai SM 750 is a sidecar motorcycle from the Chinese brand Shanghai Motorcycle Factory.

history

The designation SM 750 A is probably composed of the two letters S for Shanghai and M for motorcycle, the number 750 stands for the engine displacement . The motorcycle was mainly built for the Chinese market. It is built to be very robust and easy to maintain. In an original brochure, the address is given as Wusong District, Shanghai . It is not known whether this was just the sales department or also the production facility. There are some interesting pictures on the Chinese website. There the Donghai is shown in military use. A short history is also stored there:

  • In 1966, the commission was given to build a stronger motorcycle for use in the regional army.
  • A first prototype was completed in 1968 .
  • Up to 1971 approx. 6000 to 7000 units were produced, mainly for allies (Vietnam, Albania), few were delivered directly to China
  • In 1984, the Governor of Shanghai approved the merger of the Chinese "Shanghai Yichu Motorcycle Co., Ltd" with the Thai "Chia Tai Group" to form the "Shanghai Motorcycle Factory".
  • In 1985 production was stopped. Around 20,000 units have been completed by then
  • In 1986 spare parts production was stopped.
  • In 1992 the tools and molds were destroyed.

Refurbished spare parts for the Chinese market are offered on the website mentioned above.

technology

The engine of the Donghai is a replica of the English Triumph , whereby other motorcycle manufacturers have also built so-called parallel twin engines . The power is stated differently, 19  kW / 26  PS in the German registration certificate , 33 HP (Horse Power) in the Chinese brochures. Here, however, is already an addition (15 minutes), which affects the top speed. No maximum speed is specified in the brochure. In the short term, 120 km / h are possible, although the engine cannot take this for a long time.

Consumption is around 6–8 l normal petrol 93 RON per 100 km with a tank volume of 25 l (of which 2.5 l reserve), depending on the driving style and load. The claw-shift four-speed gearbox has its idle at the very bottom, so that the shift sequence is 0-1-2-3-4 and not 1-0-2-3-4, as is usual with most motorcycles. Overall, the technology is kept very simple, so that all important repair and maintenance work up to removing the engine can be carried out at any time with the on-board tool kit and without special tools. The chain drive is in a closed chain case , which is a great advantage on bad roads (dust, moisture).

The drum brakes are also very bad by today's standards. The brake levers were probably adopted from Chinese bicycles. So z. B. in the Chinese instructions, the braking distance is 20 m (from 50 km / h) and 9 m (from 30 km / h).

The engine oil is on the side in a separate oil tank with a capacity of 3.5 liters. The engine does not have an oil filter . The gearbox has its own oil supply of 3 liters.

The on-board electrical system has an operating voltage of 12 volts. There is an electric starter and a kick starter . The round slide carburetor supplies both cylinders , has a very simple structure and can be dismantled practically without tools. The lever for operating the choke is located directly on the carburettor.

The three-phase alternator mounted directly on the crankshaft is a major problem, which is why it has been modified by most of the Donghai owners. A special solution can be seen in the picture; here an alternator was converted from a Citroën 2 CV .

Further technical data as well as maintenance plans and spare parts lists are provided on the private Donghai site.

Donghai in Germany

In 1982 the first combinations were imported by the Rüsselsheim- based company Donghai China-Fahrzeugvertriebs-GmbH . In the beginning there were annual meetings of the Donghai drivers there. The price was 6490.00 DM including 11% sales tax , which corresponds to around 6,200 euros today. From 1984 the motorcycles were also sold by the Hamburg- based company Detlef Louis for 9,000 DM. Presumably only about 60 pieces were approved in Germany. There is practically no market for used Donghai motorcycles or spare parts.

Other teams in Germany that lead a similar exotic existence are z. B. the Chinese Chang-Jiang teams and those in the Ukrainian Dnepr teams .
