Doreen

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Doreen is a female given name.

Origin and meaning

Doreen is an English form of Dora , a name of Greek origin, combined with the suffix -een . The name is said to have been used for the first time in 1894 in the novel Doreen by the English writer and early feminist Ada Ellen Bayly (pseudonym: Edna Lyall). However, the name appears in the novel My Lords of Strogue: A Chronicle of Ireland, from the Convention to the Union by Hon. Lewis Wingfield , published in London in 1879 . Doreen was also the name of the main female character in the 1915 book The Songs of a Sentimental Bloke by Australian journalist and writer CJ Dennis .

According to another interpretation, however, it is an English spelling of the Irish woman's name Doireann (pronunciation: [ˈdˠərʲiːn]. Due to the emphasis on the name on the first syllable, it is sometimes rendered in English as "Dorren".) Doireann / Doirend is one Daughter of King Midir , son of Dagda , from the Irish legend Tochmarc Étaíne .
