Village church Lugau (Doberlug-Kirchhain)

The Protestant village church of Lugau is a Romanesque stone church in the Lugau district of Doberlug-Kirchhain in the Elbe-Elster district in Brandenburg . It belongs to the parish of Doberlug monastery parishes in the Evangelical Church District Niederlausitz of the Evangelical Church Berlin-Brandenburg-Silesian Upper Lusatia , shapes the townscape with its twin towers and can be visited by appointment.

History and architecture

The church is a hall building made of field stone blocks from the middle of the 13th century with a retracted rectangular choir and stately west transverse tower. On the north side of the choir is a barrel-vaulted sacristy , which is essentially medieval, baroque, and in the south a half-timbered vestibule from the beginning of the 18th century. A restoration took place in 1993. The design of the tower massif is extraordinary. The field stone tower, which is not in the wall bond and built in front of the ship, is not structured except for a circular screen with stepped brick walls . The west portal dates from 1905. Shortly after the completion of the nave and choir, the brick tower was probably raised by the bell storey framed by integrated corner pillars and the memorable twin tower, the gable of which is divided into storeys by saw friezes. The desired impression of a double tower front, which is otherwise only realized in the region in the Martinskirchen village church , is emphasized by the arrangement of narrow paired sound hatches and steep screens, oriented on the central axis of the two spiers.

The nave and the choir are made simpler. On the south side there are two ogival step portals: the portal in the nave with a plastic flat layer and crown cross and the choir portal in the half-timbered vestibule with historical door fittings. In 1905/1906 all window openings were enlarged and the choir gable was renewed in brick. Inside the choir is connected by a pointed triumphal arch . A three-sided gallery, protruding in the west, was built according to inscriptions in 1576 and 1631. On the flat wooden ceiling and on the gallery there are neo-baroque tendril paintings from around 1905.

Furnishing

On the block altar from the 13th century is a Baroque altarpiece with twisted columns, which was created in 1712 by Chr. Zimmermann from Luckau . Several paintings depicting the Last Supper, the Crucifixion with a kneeling donor in the main field and the Entombment are arranged one above the other. Putti are attached to the side of the entablature . The crowning figure of the triumphant Christ is deposited separately.

The pulpit from the first half of the 17th century shows the painted evangelists in diamond-coated niches on the polygonal basket between corner pillars .

The font is a work from the 15th century and is octagonal on a short column base; a minuscule inscription can be seen on the upper edge of the cup .

A late Gothic sacrament house made of wood in the shape of a pillar with a pointed arched door and a closure made of wide iron bands has also been preserved. On the southern outer wall, a tomb commemorates Christian G. Eichhorn († 1803), in the lunette are arranged a cross, chalice and palm.

The organ is a work by Gustav Heinze from 1913 with ten stops on two manuals and a pedal . The prospectus is decorated with remains of baroque ornaments.
