The Oberellen village church, which has been Evangelical Lutheran since the Reformation, is located in the Oberellen district of the Gerstungen community in the Wartburg district in Thuringia .

history

Oberellen and the associated lands came into the possession of the Reinhardsbrunn monastery in 1121 . An existing chapel was expanded by the Abbot of Reinhardsbrunn into the church of the Oberellen farmyard. The Romanesque portal tympanum dates from this time. With the Reformation the church became Protestant. In 1543 the area around Gerstungen became property of the Hanstein family . Epitaphs on the west side of the church remind of this .

The church fell into disrepair during the Thirty Years' War . From 1667 it was made usable again from an evangelical point of view and received today's galleries and the pulpit .

In 1961 the parish barn was converted into a parish hall . Lessons and events take place here, and church services in winter.

Oberellen is on the ecumenical pilgrimage route and is the penultimate stop in Thuringia and invites you to linger.

Peal

The church bell was re-cast in 1792 after it cracked. In both world wars it was removed as a metal donation and transported to the planned melting point, but returned to its home town after the end of the war. After the Second World War, they were discovered in a bell cemetery in Hamburg .

After the church was renovated, a new bell was also purchased in 2015. Financed by donations, it was manufactured in the Maria Laach bell foundry and lifted into the church tower together with the restored old bell on July 18, 2015.
