The Protestant village church Rieben is a sacred building in Rieben , a district of the town of Beelitz in the district of Potsdam-Mittelmark in the state of Brandenburg .

history

The Angerdorf Rieben was first mentioned in a document from 1335. In the land book of Charles IV from 1375 two parish hooves appeared . So it is likely that a church also existed. A building was first mentioned in 1450. On the occasion of a Protestant visitation in 1539, the existence of a pastor was also known. So far there are no meaningful documents about a church building from this time.

The building was built between 1817 and 1820, albeit without an organ . With the rapidly growing population of the former pastor suggested Schmidt during a visit to the parish Elsholz in 1891 when Superintendent Miething to an extension of the church. He also asked to buy an organ. Two years and a few correspondence later, the consistory of the ecclesiastical province of Brandenburg , based in Berlin , agreed to his request, but at the same time asked him to refrain from further letters. The parish then expanded the nave with additions on the east and south sides and redesigned the interior. The master mason Koebert from Lehnin built the gallery entrance and the choir extension for 4,600 marks . The organ builder Eifert from Stadtilm in Thuringia delivered an organ and billed the parish 2,385 marks for it. The new church consecration took place in the presence of the general superintendent Ernst Dryander on November 4, 1896.

A restoration is handed down from 1934. In 1970 a renovation took place during which the church was plastered . As a result of this construction measure, however, the indoor climate deteriorated over the decades. During the GDR era , the building continued to deteriorate. In 1975, craftsmen therefore removed the old spire and replaced it with a simple gable roof .

In 2001, experts discovered the real dry rot and closed the church to the public for security reasons. The plaster was then removed and the altar and pulpit temporarily relocated. In January 2003, the consistory initially rejected the necessary funds for a renovation. The parish therefore had to think about initiating a profanation of the building. Eventually, however, a support association, Treffpunkt Leben , was founded, which campaigned for the preservation of the sacred building. An architecture firm in Beelitz created a renovation concept. It intended to develop the church as a communal, social and ecclesiastical center. In 2006 the community renovated the roof and facade, and in 2007 the church tower. With the support of the development association, the interior was renovated in the following years and the structural changes planned in the concept were made. The office estimated the total costs to be around 700,000 euros, of which around 90,000 euros were spent on replacing the soil in the nave.

The Brandenburg State Office for the Preservation of Monuments accompanied the renovations with particular attention, as the church floor was lowered by 20 cm as a result of the construction work. When moving two pillars, the experts discovered field stone foundations, which could indicate a previous building. Furthermore, a large number of small objects were sifted out of the ground. Among them were iron objects such as nails and screws, but also crown corks from the Berliner Kindl brewery. Furthermore, several prehistoric or early historical ceramic shards, non-ferrous metal and fourteen coins were found. According to preliminary estimates, one of the coins could be dated to the 14th or 15th century.

Since then, the front third of the nave has served sacred purposes, while the rear part - separated by a glass wall - offers space for readings, exhibitions and concerts. A second floor was also pulled in there to set up an office for the mayor. Social rooms and sanitary facilities are housed in a newly built glass extension. The work was completed on September 23, 2012. During the renovation, which cost around one million euros, the municipality was able to fall back on funding from the integrated rural development concept .

The renovation measures were awarded the 2nd prize in the competition of the Foundation for the Preservation of Church Monuments in Germany.

Sanctuary

The church hall was in Gilly of style Gothic Revival built. It is provided with a light-colored plaster, so that in this condition no statement can be made about the form in which the remains of the foundation were included in the construction. The nave is kept simple and has five large, ogival windows on each side. After the renovation, access is provided on the north side via a portal that is also ogival, the apex of which corresponds to the height of the windows. There is a glass extension on the south side. Its height reaches up to the eaves of the nave and from there it merges seamlessly into the gable roof of the nave. A simple, white plastered and rectangular annex adjoins it. The choir is made of reddish bricks. On the east wall of the choir there is a group of three windows , which is stabilized with a double-stepped buttress . In the gable there are two more, smaller, but also ogival windows.

The west tower can be entered through a four-step, ogival portal. On both sides, two pointed arched windows on the left and right allow light to enter. The second floor is separated by a white, profiled cornice that continues at the height of the eaves on the west side of the nave. Above there are three more windows, followed by a roll frieze that opens downwards and separates the third and last floor from the rest of the building. On each side there are two coupled sound arcades that are crowned with a nun's head . A circular opening can be seen above each. The tower ends with a tooth frieze. The spire is clad with a copper roof, which carries a ball as well as a cross at its tip.

Furnishing

organ

The simple, wooden altar and the very simple pulpit are from modern times. There is also a chalice and a pair of brass candlesticks , which were made in the 17th century. An octagonal fifth with a brass baptismal bowl also comes from this period . A verse from the Gospel according to Matthew is stamped on it: “Let the little children come to me and do not prevent them” (19, 14). The interior of the nave is painted white, as is the flat beamed ceiling. Brown lines make it appear that there is a large format masonry. The triumphal arch is also accented with a brown stripe. The choir vault is painted with blue paint.
