The Protestant village church Weißen is located in the district of Weißen in the municipality of Uhlstädt-Kirchhasel in the district of Saalfeld-Rudolstadt in Thuringia east of the Saale , northeast of the Saale bridge to the federal road 88 and the village road towards Oberkrossen on an elevated level in the flood-prone Saale floodplain in the center of the village.

history

A church was mentioned for the first time in 1194, the remains of which were presumably used for structural purposes in the area of the choir yoke. Documented alterations and restoration work took place in the years 1715, 1750, 1798, 1834 and 1879.

The first construction phase of today's church began around the 15th century. Here the nave was first built (albeit at a lower height than today) with an entrance in the north facade and the choir bay with tower shaft , for which the existing Romanesque apse was demolished. A little later (around 1500) a new apse with two ogival windows was added. This was followed - probably in the first half of the 16th century - the nave and the triumphal arch were raised . Between approx. 1715 and 1750 the rectangular long windows were installed in the choir bay, in the apse and in the nave. The tower shaft was raised and provided with a hood . The entrance was relocated to the west wall with a covered entrance to the first gallery level. A gallery was built in, as well as the organ and the pulpit altar . The present gallery, into which parts of the original gallery were integrated, has existed since around 1834.

On April 6, 1972 (during the GDR era), lightning struck the church tower. The roof of the nave was badly damaged by falling stones and, after a makeshift repair, the church remained in a dilapidated condition for years. A demolition could be prevented after the fall of the Wall in 1989 through the efforts of Pastor Johannes Dieter and many voluntary helpers. After years of deterioration until 1993, extensive construction work began. The roof of the nave and the apse were re-covered, the tower hood was put on in 1998. In the years between 2001 and 2003, extensive woodwork followed on the ceiling, chairs and floor as well as plastering and painting work for the interior restoration. The church was consecrated again on September 18, 2004. The exterior plaster was completed in 2006 by members of the Niederkrossen community ( community helps community project ).

Bells

During the First World War , one of the two bells in the choir tower church was melted down. On July 16, 2013 the Ostthüringer Zeitung reported under the following headline: "Church in Weißen has a bell again". The bronze bell was cast in May 2013 at 1,180 degrees Celsius in Maria Laach in Rhineland-Palatinate . It weighs 217 kilograms and now replaces the bell that has been missing since the First World War, and cost 14,000 euros. It was financed through donations, the collections and church money.
