Weißen is a district of the municipality Uhlstädt-Kirchhasel in the district of Saalfeld-Rudolstadt in Thuringia .

Geography and geology

The village of Weißen is about eight kilometers to the right of the Saale from Rudolstadt . The valley is bordered by the Saale-Orlaplatte to the southeast and by the Saale-Ilmplatte to the northwest. The valley next to the riverbed of the Saale and Lache is interrupted by the dam on the railway line from Jena to Rudolstadt .

The district of Weißen is also located in the southeast Thuringian red sandstone-shell limestone plate. The slopes to the right of the Saale belong to the geological formation of red sandstone . Shell limestone is deposited on the slopes and on the mountains to the left of the Saale . Alluvial alluvial soils can be found in the Saale valley . Because of the different surface designs, the groundwater level fluctuates very strongly and moves to locations remote from the groundwater. The altitude on the river is 180  m above sea level. NN . In terms of traffic, you have to use the Weißen Saalebrücken to get onto the busy federal highway 88 .

Neighboring towns are south Weissbach , west Etzelbach , north Uhlstädt and Niederkrossen .

history

The place was first mentioned in a document in 1083. About 270 residents are at home in the village.

The place has always been oriented towards agriculture and fishing. There are also several hotels and restaurants to cater to tourism.

Clinic at the Weißenburg

The Klinik an der Weißenburg , part of the Swedish health company Capio, is the most important employer in the area. It is a specialist hospital for rheumatology and internal medicine. In 1995/96 it was expanded to include an orthopedic rehabilitation clinic. In the GDR the building was used as a TB clinic.

The Weißenburg towers 40 meters above the Saale on the northern flank of a mountain above the river. The German poet Johann Wolfgang von Goethe often visited this castle from Großkochberg .

There is also a landing stage for boat tourism on the Saale.

On July 1, 1950, the previously independent community of Weißbach was incorporated.

On December 30, 1994, Weißens was incorporated into Uhlstädt. On July 1, 2002, Uhlstädt merged with the member communities of the Uhlstädt administrative community and the Kirchhasel community to form the Uhlstädt-Kirchhasel community.
