Oberkrossen is a district of the municipality of Uhlstädt-Kirchhasel in the Saalfeld-Rudolstadt district in Thuringia .

Geography and geology

Oberkrossen is located on the right bank of the Saale and has always been associated with Kleinkrossen on the left of the Saale. Oberkrossen is connected to Kleinkrossen via a bridge. The 139 registered residents reach Uhlstädt via the local connecting road . There you have a connection to the federal highway 88 in the direction of Jena and Rudolstadt . The Großheringen – Saalfeld railway runs close to the town, and is used by the main Berlin – Munich train service.

The soils of the Saale floodplain close to the groundwater are very fertile. There is forest on the slopes of the mountains leading to the Orlaplatte. On the terrace-like plateaus, the farmers use the weathered sandstone soils. Neighboring towns are Weißen in the west , Uhlstädt in the north and Zeutsch in the east .

history

The first documentary mention of Oberkrossen took place in 1071 as Crozne . Until the beginning of the twentieth century, Oberkrossen was an independent municipality to which the district of Kleinkrossen belonged. In 1922, Oberkrossen was incorporated into Uhlstädt together with Kleinkrossen.

The Saale and its abundance of fish as well as its floodplain with the soils close to the groundwater have always played an important role for the people . In addition to agriculture and fishing, rafting was an important branch of the economy. The Uhlstadt rafting festival that takes place every two years in Oberkrossen is a reminder of this tradition .
