Baum was a part-time study assistant from 1998 to 2006 and from 2007 to 2012 university lecturer for sociological theory and educational sociology at the Institute for Sociology at the Johannes Kepler University Linz and from 1997–2011 freelance research project collaborator at the Institute for Cultural Economics and Cultural Research there.

In 2005, Doris Baum received the Austrian Leopold Kunschak Science Award and the Dr. Maria Schaumayer Sponsorship Award for her work on parenting as an educational topic (see Schriften: Baum 2006) .

Focus of work

The previous focus of work (since 1997–2009) has been in the areas of educational sociology , educational sociology and youth sociology . A common focus of the academic work can be described as the position and perspective of parents in the educational process. In addition to aspects of the diploma thesis (inclusion of parents in open lessons ), there are works on the evaluation of a primary school from the perspective of the parents (parent survey 2002) and on questions of the assessment of religious education by parents (Baum 2008). Above all, however, the study Parenthood as an Education Topic (Baum 2006) should be mentioned, which represents a comprehensive examination of the topic of parenting and family education .

Since 2012, the topics of "educational happiness" (see Baum 2014) and "religious education / spirituality education" (see Baum 2018) have been a focus of Doris Baum's research.
