Doritos is the brand name for tortilla chips made from corn , which have been industrially manufactured by Frito-Lay (a subsidiary of PepsiCo ) since 1966. Production and sales take place internationally in various markets (including Canada, Brazil, Spain, Japan, and many others) with flavors adapted to the respective region. In most countries, however, there are some core varieties based on the American model, such as "Nacho Cheese" (cheese) or "Cool Ranch" (sour cream).

The manufacturer does not advertise in Germany, but there is a product-specific website. The products are available in many retail chains such as REWE , Kaufland , Real , Edeka or Marktkauf , but no longer in discount stores.

history

Doritos production began in the first Disneyland in Anaheim , California in the early 1960s . Frito-Lay ran a "Casa de Fritos" restaurant here, which served Mexican snacks and used the company's own portfolio of snacks and chips for the side dishes . In order to avoid unnecessary waste of food, tortillas that had become dried out were deep-fried and given various spices, which is based on an idea from a supplier to the restaurant.

The resulting product quickly gained popularity with the restaurant's customers, but it was a year before Archibald Clark West, then Vice President of Marketing at Frito-Lay, discovered the chips and the potential in them in 1961 . As a result, despite initial resistance from company management, test products in different flavors were produced in some states of the USA . In 1966 the nationwide introduction of tortilla chips took place .

The market launch in Germany only took place in 1999.

    • Nacho Cheese (cheese, similar to the USA variant, only in an orange-colored packaging), Cool American (Sour Cream, similar to the USA variant, but with a different name, in a blue packaging, since summer 2020 in light green), Sweet Chili Pepper ( Sweet and hot, similar to the USA variant, black / dark blue packaging), paprika (not available in the USA)
  • UNITED STATES:
    • Doritos (Normal): Nacho Cheese (cheese), Cool Ranch (Sour Cream), Spicy Sweet Chili (sweet and hot), Taco Flavor (original version reissued, in vintage packaging), Spicy Nacho (hot), Tapatio Salsa Picante Hot Sauce (very hot), Salsa Verde, Toasted Corn (without flavor, for dipping), Doritos Blast (very hot)
    • Doritos Dinamita (rolled): Fiery Habanero, Chile Limón
    • Doritos Jacked (dipped in sauce): Ranch Dipped Hot Wings, Flamas, Tapatío
    • Doritos Mix (different flavors and shapes): Cheese Explosion, Taco Explosion
