Doug "Cosmo" Clifford (born April 24, 1945 in Palo Alto , California ) is an American musician. He gained fame primarily as the drummer of the American rock band Creedence Clearwater Revival .

Life

Childhood and youth

Doug Clifford was born in Palo Alto, California. During his youth he was mainly influenced by rock 'n' roll and its performers, such as Fats Domino , Bo Diddley , Little Richard , Elvis Presley and Carl Perkins . During high school, Clifford met John Fogerty in the school's music room, and together with Stu Cook , who was still playing the piano at the time , they formed the Blue Velvets in 1959 , which became part of the Creedence Clearwater Revival in the late 1960s .

Career with CCR

At the end of the 1960s the band had their breakthrough and created hits such as Bad Moon Rising , Lookin 'Out My Back Door , Green River and Down on the Corner , which combined elements of blues , rock'n'roll and country. Allmusic's Bruce Eder named Clifford an equally important element in the band's music, such as John Fogerty's voice and guitar style (" [...] yes, he [John Fogerty] wrote the stuff, but they were the rhythm section, and as good a rhythm section as any American white rock & roll band of the '60s ever had, on songs where the beat, not to mention the textures of the bass and the drums, counted for a lot "). He is also the namesake of the band 's fifth album, Cosmo's Factory .

Clifford was allowed to write some songs for the 1972 album Mardi Gras - like bassist Stu Cook - for the first time, including songs like Tearin 'Up the Country , which are relatively unknown outside of the Creedence Clearwater Revival fan base. Tearin 'Up the Country was also released as the b-side of Someday Never Comes , the band's final single , in 1972 but did not hit the charts.

When the band split in October 1972, he and Stu Cook sided with Fantasy Records , which brought them enmity with lead guitarist and singer John Fogerty , who found himself at odds with Fantasy immediately after the band split up. After the CCR dissolved, he released the solo album "Cosmo" (September 1972).

During his time in the band he played drums from Camco (now Drum Workshop ).

present

In 1995 he founded the band Creedence Clearwater Revisited with Stu Cook . This band does not see itself as a CCR cover band , but as a continuation of the band at that time.
