Tom Fogerty (born November 9, 1941 in Berkeley , California , as Thomas Fogerty, † September 6, 1990 in Scottsdale , Arizona ) was an American musician .

biography

Tom Fogerty was the rhythm guitarist and singer in the American rock band Creedence Clearwater Revival . He stood there in the shadow of his younger brother, John Fogerty , the front man and lead guitarist of the band that, before Tom Fogerty joined them, called themselves The Blue Velvets . However, Tom Fogerty could only bring his talent to a limited extent, since almost all pieces of Creedence Clearwater Revival were composed, written or arranged by John. Only one song written by Tom Fogerty was ever recorded on an album by the band. It is the song Walking on the Water from their time as The Golliwogs ("The Negro Dolls ") , which was later released on the band's first album under the name Walk on the Water . Only in the last work of the band, the album Mardi Gras , released in April 1972 , were the two remaining band members, Stu Cook ( bass ) and Doug Clifford ( drums ), allowed to present their own compositions, which were recorded but largely rated negatively.

Due to a dispute with his brother, Tom left the band in 1971. In the following years some solo records appeared, but they were not very successful. He was very successful live with his band Ruby (CD Precious Gems ). He also produced a record by the musician Merl Saunders . The record company did not want to press his record Sidekicks . It only appeared in 1992 after his death. The great hope of the fans, a reunion of the group Creedence Clearwater Revival, was not fulfilled.

Tom Fogerty died of respiratory failure due to tuberculosis at the age of 48 . The cause for this, however, was an AIDS disease that he contracted through a contaminated blood transfusion after a back operation.
