The Jerome State Historic Park is a state park , consisting of the property and buildings of the Douglas Mansion in Jerome is. This is one of the largest adobe adobe buildings in Arizona and houses a museum with a thematic focus on mining history. At times, the largest copper mine in the Arizona Territory was located in Jerome .

Jerome State Historic Park is located on Arizona State Route 89A between Sedona and Prescott in Yavapai County of the US state Arizona. The 1 hectare site is located at an altitude of 1597  m .

history

In 1876 three prospectors staked their claims and claimed the rich copper deposits. They sold to the United Verde Mining Company in 1883. The first dwellings of the miners consisted only of boards and canvas tarpaulin and the settlement was named in honor of Eugene Jerome . Transport costs for the ore mine soon exceeded profits and after less than two years the company had to stop production.

The new owner, William A. Clark , one of the three well-known copper barons from Butte in Montana, had the necessary foresight and financial means to build the Verde Valley Railroad in 1911, thereby reducing transport costs considerably. In the early 20th century, the United Verde was the highest-yielding copper mine in the Arizona Territory. With that success, there was enough capital in Jerome to build brick buildings, two churches, an opera house, a school, and other public facilities.

In 1912, James S. Douglas acquired the Little Daisy Mine and expanded it. In 1916 there were two very productive ore mines in Jerome. The peak of copper production was in 1929, until the global economic crisis and mines with lower ore content changed the situation negatively. The Little Daisy Mine closed in 1938. The Phelps Dodge Corporation took over United Verde in 1935, but declines in profits led to the end of mining in Jerome in 1953.

The Douglas Mansion was planned and built as a hotel by James S. Douglas in 1916 to accommodate mining officials, investors and family members. The equipment included a wine cellar, a billiard room, marble-clad showers, steam heating and a central vacuum cleaner . The building itself is made of adobe bricks that were made on site.

memorial

In 1962, Lewis and James Douglas, the sons of James S. Douglas, transferred the Douglas Mansion and 2.43 acres of land to be used as a visitor center and museum in a state park. The Douglas Mansion has been converted into the Douglas Memorial Mining Museum . On October 16, 1965, Jerome State Historic Park opened as the fifth state park in Arizona. On November 13, 1966, the state park was listed as a Historic District on the National Register of Historic Places and received the status of a National Historic Landmark .

In the outdoor area, among other things, mining cars and a five-stamp stamping mill , which was used to crush the ore lumps , are on display. A picnic area is attached. Jerome State Historic Park closed for renovation work on the building on February 26, 2009. In January 2010 it was announced that the reopening would be delayed for financial reasons. Other state parks in Arizona have also been closed to the public. Thanks to a grant from Yavapai County, it opened again five days a week in October 2010.
