Velez is a municipality (municipio) in the department of Santander in northeastern Colombia and the capital of the province of Vélez . It is the first city in the world to introduce women's suffrage (1853). The diocese of Vélez has its seat in Vélez .

Vélez is located in the province of Vélez in Santander at an altitude of 2050 m above sea level. history

Vélez was one of the first cities founded in Colombia in 1539. One of the functions of the newly founded city was the subjugation of the indigenous peoples of the area. The city later gained importance due to its strategic location on the way from the highlands to the Río Magdalena .

The main economic sectors of Vélez are trade and cattle and milk production . In addition, the cultivation of guavas and their processing into Bocadillo Veleño play an important role.
