Dr Gray's Hospital is a hospital in the Scottish town of Elgin in the Moray Council Area . In 1981 the structure was included in the Scottish monument lists in the highest monument category A.

history

The surgeon Alexander Gray died in July 1807. As a doctor in the East India Company , he had amassed a considerable fortune. In a disputed will within the family, Gray provided £ 20,000 to build a hospital for impoverished local people. After all legal challenges to the will were thrown out in 1814, on the recommendation of the Earl of Moray, the Scottish architect James Gillespie Graham was entrusted with the planning of the hospital. The laying of the foundation stone in June 1815 was reportedly interrupted by the announcement of Wellington's victory at the Battle of Waterloo .

On January 1, 1819, Dr Gray's Hospital opened. The 30 beds were initially open to those citizens of Moray who could show a means certificate from their local clergyman. Now managed by the NHS , the hospital was modernized during the 1990s. In the first construction phase, which was completed in May 1995, new surgical, orthopedic, gynecological and pediatric wards and an obstetrics ward were set up. The second construction phase was completed in January 1997. It comprised a psychiatric ward, the accident and emergency department and a department for imaging examinations. The original buildings were modernized in a third construction phase, also completed in 1997. The total volume was £ 22 million. In 2012, funding of £ 3 million was made available for a further expansion. A further £ 1.7 million was made available in 2020.
