Dragan Velikić ( Serbian - Cyrillic Драган Великић ; * 1953 in Belgrade , Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia ) is a Serbian novelist, essayist, journalist, former Serbian ambassador to Austria and one of the most internationally famous contemporary authors from the Balkans .

life and work

Velikić grew up in Pula , a town on the Croatian peninsula of Istria . He studied literature at the University of Belgrade . In the early 1990s he worked for several weekly magazines, including a weekly magazine critical of the regime. From 1996 to 1999 he was editor-in-chief of the publishing house ' B92 ' in Belgrade and thus also editor-in-chief of the well-known radio station of the same name. With the exception of his temporary emigration to Vienna , Budapest and Berlin during the Kosovo War in 1999 , he was one of the most important and courageous critical writers of Milošević's time. Velikić rejected any form of nationalism and chauvinism .

He publishes volumes of short stories, essays and novels. His books have been translated into numerous languages ​​and published worldwide. He publishes in many European magazines, u. a. in Die Weltwoche , Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung , Die Zeit and Lettre International .

Velikić was Serbia's ambassador to Austria from 2005 to 2009 .

His novels and stories are about people who are uprooted and looking for their place in life. For Velikić, the emigrant and refugee is the most important figure of the 20th and 21st centuries. He links individual fates with European history. He is dedicated to the search for identity across national and linguistic borders and across generations.

Dragan Velikić is a signatory of the declaration published in 2017 on the common language of Croatians , Serbs , Bosniaks and Montenegrins .

Velikić has repeatedly interfered in current political debates. He criticized the current domestic political repression in Serbia under the ruling Serbian Progress Party . Despite his opposition to the dictatorial system under President Aleksandar Vučić in Serbia - his phone is tapped and public appearances are prohibited - he continued to live in Belgrade.
