Dragash ( Albanian also Dragashi or Sharr / -i ; Serbian Драгаш Dragaš , Bosnian Dragaš ) is a place in Kosovo and the official seat of the municipality of the same name in the south of the country. The place is the center of the Gorans in Kosovo.
Surname
The city is named after the medieval regional Serbian prince Konstantin Dragaš . The name Dragaš is derived from the Serbo-Croatian drag ( dear, dear ).
The Albanian name Sharr is derived from the mountains of the same name (Albanian Maja e Sharrit , Serbian / Macedonian Šar Planina ).
geography
The Dragash territory is located in the extreme south of Kosovo and is surrounded by the Šar Planina Mountains and the Koritnik , Gjalic and Cylen Mountains. The road to Prizren, which is the only connection to other municipalities and cities, runs through the northern, flatter part of the area. The municipality borders Macedonia to the east and south and Albania to the west .
The municipality is the highest in the country. The main town itself is higher than 1000 meters, while the highest district Restelica in the south of the municipality is at over 1400 meters. The highest point of the community territory is the summit of Rudoka on the Macedonian border (2661 m).
population
Dragash counted 1,098 inhabitants in the 2011 census. Of these, 567 (51.64%) described themselves as Gorans , 498 (45.36%) as Albanians , 18 (1.64%) as Bosniaks , 7 as Turks , 2 as Roma or Balkan Egyptians and 6 gave a different answer ethnicity.

economy
Due to its unfavorable soil conditions and geographical location, Dragash is one of the most underdeveloped areas of Kosovo. The most important employers are the UNMIK police, private companies such as KUK Commerc , MEKA and some of the companies that were formerly publicly owned or owned by the state.
All former state-owned companies are under the responsibility of the KTA ( Kosovo Trust Agency ). UNMIK initiated the privatization of the companies so that foreign companies can invest.
Infrastructure
The district is very mountainous and therefore suffers from infrastructure problems, so access to some villages is impossible in winter. Roads, in particular the Zhur-Dragash, Dragash-Brod and Dragash-Restelica connections, urgently need to be expanded in order to promote social and economic development in the region.
Bus connections between Dragash and Opoja already existed in the 1990s and were improved by donations from the OSCE-SIMF organization . There are also taxi connections, but because of the high travel costs, they are unaffordable for the poor. Although the telephone connection has improved a lot in recent years, some villages still have no connections. The water supply is guaranteed in some villages. In some other villages (Brrut, Zgatar, Bellobrad and others) there is hardly any water, the residents there have to get by without water for most of the day.
In May 2018, a new road was opened that connects Dragash with the Albanian Shishtavec .
