Shishtavec ( Albanian  also  Shishtaveci ) is a village in Albania . It is located in Qark Kukës in the far northeast of the country on the border with Kosovo .

Until 2015, Shishtavec was an independent municipality ( komuna ), which also included the villages of Novoseja, Borja, Oreshka and Cërnaleva; since then this former municipality forms an administrative unit ( njësia administrative ) within the Bashkia Kukës .

geography

The place is east of the Gjallica in a mountainous area at around 1350  m above sea level. A. A hill a few 100 meters east of the village reaches 1477  m above sea level. A. - The border to Kosovo runs along it. The mountains south of the place exceed heights of 2000 meters. The highest is the Kallabak ( 2717  m above sea level ).

The whole area on both sides of the border is called Gora , an ethnographic region inhabited by the Gorans .

Neighboring towns on the Albanian side are the hamlet of Bala in the south and Novoseja in the west, while Krusheva is one kilometer away to the east on the Kosovar side of the border. The city of Kukës is located around 30 kilometers northwest.

population

At the 2011 census, the entire community of Shishtavec had 3835 inhabitants, of which 68.34% described themselves as Albanians and 7.74% as Macedonians . In fact, Shishtavec is largely settled by Gorans , a Muslim and Slavic- speaking minority. Although these - at least on the Albanian side of the Gora - usually see themselves as belonging to the Albanian ethnic group, they have retained their linguistic identity in the domestic and family environment, so that most children only learn Albanian at school, since only Goranian at home is spoken.

history

With the First Balkan War and the accompanying Serbian occupation of Kosovo and northern Albania, the government of the Kingdom of Serbia set up a local military administration . A separate municipality was created with its seat in Shishtavec, to which the villages Novoseja, Kollovoz and Shtreza also belonged. A census carried out in 1919 counted 320 Muslim residents in 113 households in Shishtavec.

The region around Shishtavec only finally became part of the national territory of Albania in 1922, after the Albanian border had been established , whereby the Gora region was now divided into two states. In 1924, an Albanian-speaking school was opened in Shishtavec for the first time.

Despite the borders closed by the socialist regime of Albania , gorans - unlike ethnic Albanians - were allowed to cross the border with Yugoslavia to conduct business and trade in Prizren . After the end of socialism, many Shishtavec residents emigrated to Great Britain in the 1990s .

economy

Subsistence farming is the most important livelihood for the residents who have remained in Shishtavec , with many families also benefiting from occasional foreign transfers from relatives who have emigrated.

Shishtavec is known for growing potatoes . Potatoes are mainly grown on the village's 100 hectares of cultivated land. A potato festival is held every year. During the times of socialism, Shishtavec produced potatoes for all of Albania, making the village an important pillar for the self-sufficient supply system. Nowadays, however, potato growers lack market access .

tourism

Tourism is also increasingly developing into an economic factor in Shishtavec. The terrain is particularly suitable for skiing , which was first practiced here by Austro-Hungarian troops during the First World War and has since become a tradition among the locals as well. A hostel opened in 2015 on the downhill slope above the village. In summer, the unspoilt and panoramic mountain landscape (including the Korab Mountains ) is ideal for hiking, which is already used by many foreign tourists.
