action

Dragon and Cowboy are best friends from the best of families. However, Dragon is quite lazy to learn and leaves his school education mainly to others. During one of their forays through his village, the two come to a river where a group of women are washing clothes. The two fall in love with pretty Alice. Dragon agrees to portray Cowboy as a hero with the help of two pals who pretend to be lustful to harass Alice. However, he only used this as an excuse to portray himself as a hero. Disappointed and angry, Cowboy attacks Dragon and a fight ensues, which lowers Dragons ambitions with Alice, exposes him to his father and breaks his friendship with Cowboy. However, they quickly reconcile.

At the same time, a group of antique smugglers managed to steal some Chinese art and, with the help of Cowboy's father, who works for the English consul, found foreign buyers. However, the group's vice-captain, Tiger, is not enthusiastic about selling the art of his ancestors to foreigners, but he does not get a hearing in the group or even with the big boss. When a piece is missing a little later, Tiger is immediately suspected of having stolen it. In fact, he has hidden some pieces and is supposed to pay with his life for his betrayal. However, he can flee. During a pheasant hunt, the paths of the dragon, cowboy and tiger, who is hiding in the same tall grass where the two boys hunt the pheasant, cross. Inadvertently, they distract the smugglers from Tiger, but receive a heavy beating. Big Boss apologizes and lets the search for Tiger continue.

Dragon and Cowboy are members of the local badminton team, the Dragons , in which two teams of five people have to kick a badminton ball into the opponent's goal (similar to soccer ). They play against the Braves under their team captain Killer in the cup final. The game doesn't go well for the Dragons at first and they are quickly 3-0 down. But the Dragons prove their morale and can still score three goals. When the Braves score a goal at the end, it is not recognized as the shuttlecock did not cross the line until after the final whistle. Thus it comes to an extension. In this cowboy grows beyond himself and can prevent defeat with his quick reflexes. However, the Braves received another penalty shortly before the end. The Dragons are sure they have lost, given the last penalty that Cowboy previously misled. However, he learned from it and was not only able to prevent the penalty kick, but also hit the shuttlecock so far in the direction of Dragon that he scored the decisive 4: 3 with a shot into the empty opposing goal. Out of sheer joy about winning the cup, Dragon shoots the shuttlecock into the audience, where it accidentally hits Alice in the face. He tries to apologize, but doesn't really impress Alice.

To show Alice how much he loves her, Dragon and his teammates write a letter. This letter is supposed to reach her through the air with the help of a kite. However, due to unfavorable winds the letter is carried away. Since he is supposed to end up in the neighboring village, where an unattractive woman with the same name is supposed to live, Dragon pursues the dragon with the letter. To make matters worse, the dragon ends up in the smugglers' hideout. There is also Tiger there who tries to steal more antiques. Due to Dragon, who only wants to get his dragon back, he gives up the plan and flees because Dragon is quickly noticed. The smugglers try to impale Dragon, but he can always save himself thanks to his athleticism. The smugglers surround him, but let him go, as Cowboy's father stands up for Dragon.

A little later, Tiger, seriously injured, reaches the village and finds shelter in the temple there, where a festival of sacrifices is being held, in which Dragon and Alice also take part. To the delight of Dragons, Alice is to be introduced to him soon, but she seeks the favor of the gods to give love a chance. At the same time, Tiger is discovered and attacked by two smugglers. Dragon takes up the fight against the two and with the help of the villagers can at least get them to retreat. In truth, they lie in wait to see where Tiger is being taken. Since Cowboy's father's barn would be big enough, he is taken there, which makes Big Boss think when reporting his subordinates that he is being betrayed by him.

While Dragon is getting medicine for Tiger, the smugglers take the barn and take Cowboy hostage unnoticed by Dragon. Cowboy is supposed to try to get rid of Dragon, which also seems to work. However, he notices that something is wrong and climbs onto the barn's beams and notices that the smugglers are present. When these tigers want to kill, Cowboy interferes, but is beaten for it. But first Dragon can save Cowboy and Tiger. A fight ensues that Dragon can keep up with. However, some of the smugglers break off the fight because they are impressed with Dragon's strength of will and offer Tiger to escape. Then they withdraw. Tiger wants to go when he is attacked and killed by Big Boss.

Big Boss suspects that Dragon and Cowboy know where Tiger is hiding the antiques and threatens to kill them if they don't tell him. When they refuse despite the lack of information, Big Boss attacks both of them. His skills and strength are far superior to those of Dragon and Cowboy and take them one hit after the other. In order to build up further pressure, Big Boss draws Cowboy's trapped father into the fighting and threatens to kill him too. Cowboy, who fights against Big Boss with blind rage, has absolutely no chance and is pushed from the upper floor of the barn and seriously injured. He begs Dragon to kill Big Boss and Dragon accepts it. The two continue to fight relentlessly and Dragon has to dig deep into his bag of tricks to even have a chance. He even throws stones at Big Boss, who are fended off by him. In one of these attempts at defense, however, Dragon manages to throw the stone back using his badminton skills and hits Big Boss over the left eye, whose wound immediately begins to bleed profusely. Since Big Boss' right eye is just a prosthesis through which he cannot see anything, his vision is now severely restricted by the blood that constantly flows over the left eye, which gives Dragon an advantage. He wins the fight when he lets Big Boss slide down a transport chute through a flap. Together with Cowboy, Dragon buries Big Boss with heavy sacks of flour, who collapses under the load and dies. With it he also saves Cowboy's father.

Cowboy's father reports about the smuggling ring to the English consul, earning Dragons fame in the process. He and his friends are part of a large rugby- style game that involves securing a golden ball from the top of a bamboo pyramid into a sack with the team color. There are four teams in large numbers. After the start, the players push their way up the bamboo pyramid until it collapses. On the ground everyone fights doggedly for the ball. In the end, Dragon succeeds in putting the ball in the team sack to bring his team the victory.

criticism

"An endless series of brawls that should be loosened up with slapstick and shallow humor."

Remarks

  • The highlights of the film are the game of spring football, the fight on a large bamboo pyramid and the final battle in which Chan can be visibly beaten like a sandbag for about 10 minutes.
  • During the fight for a good luck charm on a high pyramid made of bamboo sticks, it collapsed and 90 of the 200 stuntmen were injured, some seriously.
  • It was a peculiarity of the film to cover Big Boss' eye prosthesis with objects and shadows until the final battle, so that only then does it become clear to the viewer what his eye is all about.
  • Jackie Chan suffered a severe fracture of his chin while filming, which left him unable to speak for a while.
  • In terms of content, the theme of Drunken Master II and Rush Hour was anticipated in this film with the antiques smuggling.
  • Dragon Lord was the most expensive film ever released by Golden Harvest .
  • There is a TV dubbing in which the film is called The Mad Dragon Hero and has been dubbed with a new name.
  • There are places on the Collector's Edition DVD where you can see the characters speak, but you can't hear their voices.
  • In order for a scene of the film to be shot, it should have taken about 2900 takes, which is also the most shots for a scene in film history.
