Ludwig Ferdinand Schmid

Ludwig Ferdinand Schmid (pseudonym: Dranmor ); * July 22, 1823 in Muri near Bern ; † March 17, 1888 in Bern , was a Swiss poet and businessman who lived in Brazil and Paris for many years .

Life

After the death of his father, who immigrated from Germany , Schmid was initially forced to start a commercial apprenticeship in Basel in 1840 . At the age of 18 he wrote his most famous poem I want to go to sleep . At the same time he forged travel plans. In 1843 he settled in Brazil as a sales representative, first in Santos , then in Rio de Janeiro . He became wealthy there and was able to afford trips to North America and St. Helena .

In 1851 Ferdinand Schmid traveled all over Europe, and in 1852 he became Austrian Consul General in Brazil. From 1860 he published his culturally pessimistic poems under the pseudonym Dranmor . After his marriage in 1865 to the Frenchwoman Lise Aglaë Marque from Rouen , he moved to Paris in 1868, where he published further works. In 1874 he returned to Brazil for economic reasons, but was unable to continue his earlier trading success. After journalistic attempts, he returned to Bern in 1887 after 44 years, impoverished, where he died in 1888 and was buried in the Schosshaldenfriedhof .

Schmid received the gold medal for art and science from the Austrian emperor .
