Dream Boy is the title of a 2008 literary film adaptation, the plot of which is based on the novel of the same name by the writer Jim Grimsley . The film has been shown in German-speaking cinemas since December 11, 2008.

Short story

Nathan is an introverted boy who recently moved his family to a small town in a conservative southern state. The tense relationship between Nathan and his father becomes increasingly clear as the story progresses. What is initially assumed to be a normal father-son conflict develops into the painful realization that the boy has been sexually abused. In his new environment, Nathan meets the somewhat older Roy, who drives the school bus as a part-time job. A friendship develops between the two boys after Nathan helps Roy with a presentation. As a result, the first scene that goes beyond friendship occurs. Lovingly but firmly, Roy asks Nathan to touch him some time later when the two are alone on the school bus. This sentence leaves room for interpretation with regard to sexual abuse. But Nathan and Roy have to keep their love for each other a secret, including Roy's friend Evelyn.

Nathan's contacts with Roy also bring many advantages to the boy. So one day he can accompany Roy and his two older friends Randy and Burke on a camping trip. When Roy has oral sex with Nathan in a remote house, Randy and Burke discover them. Nathan is then brutally raped by Burke and knocked down by a blow on his head. Nathan had a kind of premonition that he would never leave this place again. However, it is never 100 percent clear whether Nathan is really dead. You can see the funeral of the boy, where Roy clearly shows his grief, but then you can also see Nathan returning to Roy covered in blood.

Background information

The film, which was produced inexpensively with a budget of only 1.2 million dollars, was shot in St. Francisville , Louisiana , after initially planning to shoot in Portland ( Oregon ). But budget reasons forced the shooting team to Louisiana.

Reviews

  • cinema.de:
    • Disappointing romance between two gay boys in the deeply religious south of the USA, which - overloaded with half-baked subplots - ends up stylistically derailed and ends just as confused and abrupt.
  • film.de:
    • The first gentle touch, hidden kisses and the discovery of one's own sexuality are shown without false shame. The story of a first love, a taboo break, almost mythical but full of pain and at the same time breathtakingly realistic, accompanied by a longing film music composed especially for "Dream Boy".
