Patricia Rooney Mara (born April 17, 1985 in Bedford , New York ) is an American actress . At the beginning of her career she was often referred to as Tricia Mara .

life and career

Rooney Mara is the daughter of Timothy Christopher Mara and Kathleen Mara (nee McNulty). She has three siblings: Daniel, Conor and Kate Mara , who is also an actress. She grew up in New York and attended high school there . She then traveled to Ecuador , Peru and Bolivia as part of a learning program . Since then she has been involved in the charity Faces of Kibera . She later studied psychology at New York University . She graduated there in 2010. Her role model is Gena Rowlands .

Mara took on her first small role in 2005 in the movie Dark Legends 3 . She then played a number of guest roles on television series such as Emergency Room and Law & Order: New York . In 2009 she starred in the dramas Dare and The Winning Season . Both films premiered at the 2009 Sundance Film Festival . Filmmaker magazine then counted her among the "25 new faces in independent film". In the same year she was also seen in the films Youth in Revolt and Tanner Hall . In it she played her first leading role and was first performed under the name Rooney Mara instead of Tricia Mara .

Mara gained greater fame in 2010 for her role in the horror film A Nightmare on Elm Street , the remake of the original 1984 film of the same name. In the same year she was directed by David Fincher for the drama The Social Network in front of the camera. The film tells the story of how the social network Facebook and its founder Mark Zuckerberg came into being . Mara and her fellow actors have received several film awards for their ensemble performance.

In 2011 she played the role of Lisbeth Salander in the US remake of the film Verblendung based on the novel of the same name by Stieg Larsson , again directed by David Fincher, alongside Daniel Craig . The US film title is The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo . Mara was nominated for an Oscar and a Golden Globe for her performance in 2012 . The role helped her international breakthrough. At the Cannes International Film Festival in 2015, Rooney Mara was awarded for best actress in the film Carol and nominated for an Oscar .

Rooney Mara is vegan for ethical reasons . She doesn't use leather products and has founded a label that produces vegan fashion.
