action

It's Olga Knopf's birthday and is expecting her two sisters Mathilde and Irmgard to visit. Mathilde Lehmberg appears first. When she reports about a new male acquaintance, Olga immediately reproaches her for not having to do it at her age. Olga, on the other hand, has an artistic streak and often reminisces about her time at the vaudeville theater, even though she only works there as a seamstress. For 26 years she has had her foster son Tassilo, who, according to her ideas, should become an artist, but still practicing juggling quite unsuccessfully. Accordingly, a lot of crockery is always broken. The third sister, Irmgard Schulze-Knopf, arrives soon and reports on her divorce that has just been concluded. The conversation breaks off when the ballet master Vera keeps arriving and immediately attracts everyone's attention and conversation. After four unsuccessful marriages, she just fell in love - with Irmgard's ex-husband Christoph-Maria Schulze of all places. The relationship between the two rivals, who constantly insult each other, is correspondingly frosty. The caretaker Fritze Baumann, who disturbs the coffee table because he wants to measure the apartment because of an imminent renovation, brings a short break. Together with his son Udo, he messes up the entire birthday party. In his clumsiness, Udo also produces a short circuit. As soon as the light goes back, the neighbor Fraulein Birnstengel comes to congratulate and plays a serenade for Olga on her cello. But the Baumanns do not let themselves be disturbed in their preparatory work and in the end the birthday party has to withdraw and the sisters decide to continue the celebration a few days later in Irmgard's café. Fräulein Birnstengel is the first to arrive with her cello and play a song with Udo. He came with his father because he wanted to apologize for his behavior on Olga's birthday. Irmgard agrees, because Fritz Baumann can repair the defective heating in the café right away. In the meantime, she and Olga make their way to the wholesale market to buy drinks. In the meantime, Christoph-Maria Schulze uses his chance to have the furniture of the café that was awarded to him during the divorce removed. However, he is not really at ease with it, but Vera Constantly has not left him alone. Without further ado, Irmgard ordered furniture from the city on loan, which should arrive at any moment. Before that happens, however, a strange woman gets lost in the café, but she doesn't want to drink coffee, but only shows interest in the bar and the high-proof drinks. After a while the woman introduces herself as Alice Kümmel and friends of Udo Baumann. Fritz therefore thinks she is Udo's friend, who is said to be expecting a child from him. Because of her advanced age and very common behavior, Fritz is not very enthusiastic about the woman. Fortunately, the whole thing turns out to be a mistake, because Udo and Tassilo had only recruited Ms. Kümmel as the new cleaning lady for the café. Unexpectedly, Christoph-Maria appears at his ex-wife Irmgard and asks her to apologize. He has realized that Vera Constant is probably not the right woman for him after all. In his description, Irmgard notices that Christoph-Maria has fallen for a trick by Mathilde. She had sent the ventriloquist Antonio to Vera because she supposedly had a very effective home remedy for his cold and sudden hoarseness. Now Christoph-Maria had surprised Vera and the artist lying in bed and thought about it. In revenge, Christoph-Maria now wants to give his ex-wife tables and chairs as gifts. Irmgard, however, has her pride and does not accept the gift. She suffers from the satisfaction of seeing her ex-husband devastated. But when the community brings the furniture and it is not suitable for a café, Irmgard has to accept her old furniture. Now the sisters can finally celebrate Olga's birthday in peace.
