The Third Man Museum is a film museum in Vienna's 4th district, Wieden , in the immediate vicinity of the Naschmarkt .

History and description

The Third Man Museum, which opened in 2005, has an area of ​​over 400 m² in 14 rooms with a comprehensive collection exclusively of original exhibits relating to the international hit film “ The Third Man ”, filmed in Vienna in 1948 , based on the novel by Graham Greene .

The Third Man Museum is a two-person project initiated by Gerhard Strassgschwandtner. The collection comes from Strassgschwandtner, design and conception from Karin Höfler. In the spirit of the earlier universalists , they built the museum entirely on their own, without outsourcing . It is a private museum with no sponsors and no subsidies .

The museum is a contact point for film fans and at the same time a door opener to Viennese post-war history. The exhibits on display testify to the international success of the film and describe everyday life in the city that was occupied by the Allies (Americans, Soviets, British, French) from 1945 to 1955.

The collection

The 3000 original exhibits currently on display in the museum show:

  • The script by British actor Trevor Howard, with hundreds of entries, used in Vienna and London for the filming .
  • Other documents such as letters and photos from Trevor Howard's private estate.
  • Film-specific correspondence from the author Graham Greene .
  • The film cap of Herbert Halbik , who played the four-year-old "Hansel" in the film. With interview and documents from Herbert Halbik about the film.
  • The film zither by Anton Karas , with which he composed the film music in London and recorded it for the film.
  • The former private exhibition of Anton Karas, which he set up in Vienna and which is now installed in the Third Man Museum with the original hanging of photos and documents.
  • Documentaries on all actors in the film.
  • Two Debrie Parvo 35 mm film cameras (models LS and K), with which the Austrian cameraman Hans Schneeberger shot several short scenes from the film.
  • A special exhibition on Orson Welles with interviews with his longtime companion and muse Oja Kodar , who bequeathed exhibits from her private archive to the museum.
  • The scripts produced for the preparations and for the film (draft script, 2nd draft for the US co-producer, script for the shooting in Vienna by the cameraman of the third team, as well as the dialogue connection script and the release script).
  • Over 100 book editions of Graham Greene's novel The Third Man .
  • Over 70 movie posters from The Third Man (premieres and re-performances).
  • A fully functional Ernemann VIIb projector from 1936, with which all visitors to the Third Man Museum can see a 2-minute sequence from the original British film.

Special exhibitions and events

Every year special exhibitions are held in the Third Man Museum. Topic-related events are also held regularly in the Third Man Museum.

  • The Gutenberg Book Guild used the museum on April 6, 2017 for the presentation of Graham Greene's reissued novel The Third Man , illustrated by Annika Siems.
  • The Austrian zither player Cornelia Mayer plays the complete film music of The Third Man with Viennese Stringing in the museum every month as part of a concert .
  • The American director and actor Erik Van Beuzekom performed his one-man play Rosebud at the Third Man Museum in May 2018 .

Opening times and guided tours

The museum organizes exclusive tours.

  • Museum tour: Every week, usually on a Wednesday, the collector-owner-operator leads through the museum in English and uses documents to give deeper insights into the history of the film and the creation of the extensive collection.
  • Post-war Vienna - guided city walk: This in-house production by the museum visits the most important places in Vienna's post-war history in order to find out the background and international context. This tour includes a visit to the post-war exhibition in Vienna in the Third Man Museum.

On Saturdays from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m., the museum can also be visited without taking a guided tour.
