The Dronning Margrethe II was a ferry of the Danske Statsbaner that entered service in 1973 . The ship last used by Scandlines between Gedser and Rostock remained in service until 2005 and was then scrapped in India . The name referred to Queen Margrethe II.

history

The Dronning Margrethe II was ordered in May 1970 from the Nakskovs Skibsværft in Nakskov and laid down on October 6, 1972 under the hull number 200. The launch took place on March 14, 1973. After the takeover by Danske Statsbaner on December 6, 1973, the ship began ferry operations between its home port of Korsør and Nyborg .

On March 22, 1977, during a crossing with 267 passengers on board, a fire broke out in the engine room of the Dronning Margrethe II , which, however, proceeded without major damage and injuries. In May 1981 the ship returned to its builder in Nakskov to be lengthened there from 132.66 to 144.7 meters. This also increased the tonnage and the capacity of passengers and vehicles. In March 1982 the Dronning Margrethe II returned to the ferry service.

In the years that followed, the ship regularly changed routes, including briefly sailing between Warnemünde and Gedser in March 1983 . On March 14, 1991, the Dronning Margrethe II collided with the Ro-Ro freighter Bore Britannica , which was put into service in 1978 , which killed a crew member on the Dronning Margrethe II . In February 1992 the ship was damaged by another fire in Nakskov.

The Dronning Margrethe II in Rostock, August 2004

In August 1995, the Dronning Margrethe II became the property of Scandlines, who also used it on different routes. Since June 1, 1999, the ship has been in service between Gedser and Rostock. On March 11, 2003 it ran onto a sandbank in front of Gedser, but was released a few hours later on its own. The Dronning Margrethe II remained in service until January 31, 2005 before it was taken out of service by Scandlines.

In February 2005 the ship went to Marwan Shipping & Trading and was henceforth registered under the flag of North Korea . In the same month it was given the shortened name Margrethe and was transferred to Nakskov. In April, the Margrethe went to a demolition yard in Alang , India , where she arrived on May 5th. However, due to contractual inconsistencies with the previous owner Scandlines, the ship was transferred to Dubai in June . It was not until November 20 that the ship , which had meanwhile been renamed Beauport II , finally arrived in Alang for demolition.
