Drosera pygmaea is a carnivorous plant belonging to the sundew genus( Drosera ). The first description was in 1824 by Augustin Pyramus de Candolle .

description

Drosera pygmaea is a perennial herbaceous plant . This forms a basal, compact, rosette-shaped bud made of leaves with a diameter of about 2 cm. The stem axis is short and covered with few or no withered leaves from the preseason.

The bud of the stipules is ovate, shaggy, 3.5 mm long and 3 mm in diameter at the base. The stipules themselves are 3 mm long, 1.7 mm wide, 0.6 mm wide at the base and three-lobed. The middle lobe is divided into 3 pointed segments. The edges of the lateral lobes are entire and divided into 2 pointed segments at the tip. The outer lobes are exactly as long as the middle lobes.

The leaf blades are circular, very deeply indented and 1.5 mm in diameter. The longer tentacle glands are on the edge, the shorter ones on the inside. The underside is bare. The leaf stalks are 6 mm long, 0.3 mm long at the base, widen to 0.5 mm shortly after the base and taper to 0.2 mm at the leaf blade. They are 0.2 mm thick, partially half-flattened round and completely hairless.

Flowering time is September to January. The one to four inflorescence stalks are up to 2.5 cm long and completely covered with a few tiny glands. Each peduncle bears a single flower without bracts. The four narrowly egg-shaped sepals are 2.7 mm long and 1.3 mm wide. The lower edges are ganzrandig , the tips and the upper edges are irregular cut . The surface is hairless. The four petals are white, obovate with a wedge-shaped finger at the base, 3.3 mm long and 2.5 mm wide. The tips and the margins are whole .

The four stamens are 1.7 mm long. The stamens , the anthers and the pollen are white. The white ovary is obovate, 0.7 mm long and 0.7 mm in diameter. The four white styluses are 1 mm long with the grain section and slightly curved upwards. The scars are club-shaped and have a pimply surface.

The formation of brood scales is typical for dwarf sundews. The very broad, egg-shaped, 0.15 mm thick brood scales are formed in large numbers from late November to early December and are approx. 0.6 mm long and 0.6 mm wide .

Distribution of D. pygmaea in Australia

distribution

Drosera pygmaea has its main distribution on the southeast coast of Australia (from the south along Tasmania up to Queensland ). It grows there on sandy soils that cover sandstone rocks. It also thrives on the edges of swamps and low valleys on peaty sandy soils.

Known populations are found in the states of South Australia , Queensland , New South Wales , Victoria , Tasmania . The plant can also be found sporadically in the southwest (near Albany) and in New Zealand (west coast of the two main islands). This makes Drosera pygmaea the only dwarf sundew that grows outside of Australia.

Systematics

The name '"pygmaea"' is derived from the Latin pygmaeus and means "dwarf". It is easy to recognize by the 4-petalled flowers. The populations on the west coast of Australia do not quite match the populations on the east coast. So far, however, no subspecies has been assumed.
