Pressure is a German youth - web and TV series about the life and the problems of young people. It is the German adaptation of the Norwegian original series Skam . The successful format has already been adapted in numerous countries such as France, Italy, Spain, the Netherlands and the USA. The online media service funk , which is aimed at a young target group between the ages of 14 and 29, has been publishing the series via the social media platform YouTube since March 2018 . The series was nominated for both the 55th Grimme Prize 2019 and the 56th Grimme Prize 2020 in the Children & Youth category.

Concept and content

Druck tells of the life around the young women Hanna, Mia, Kiki, Amira and Sam at the Barnim-Gymnasium in Berlin and deals with everyday and current topics such as friendship, love and the search for one's own identity. Each season treats a previously introduced character as the main character and tells the story from their point of view.

The series is published by funk in a previously unfamiliar way. While the entire episodes mostly go online on Fridays, individual pieces from these episodes are made available as clips during the week. At the beginning of the clips, which have no uniform running times, striking yellow lettering is displayed, which describes the time being told, i.e. the day of the week and the time. The viewers can also follow the characters on Instagram and learn more about the plot. In addition, WhatsApp -Chats the figures put online.

The first season is about Hanna and started on March 19, 2018 with the first clips from the student's life. After Hanna has teased her best friend's partner, she suddenly finds herself without friends at school and is attacked and marginalized by her former clique. The relationship with her boyfriend Jonas also suffers as a result. Hanna finally finds a stop with a new group of friends.

The second season deals with Mia, a close friend of Hanna. Mia is a feminist and therefore thinks very little of the arrogant Alexander Hardenberg, who exercises a bad influence on her friend Kiki. After Mia asks Alex to end her relationship with Kiki, she gets to know another side of Alex and slowly develops feelings for him, which in turn endangers the friendship with Kiki. The first clips for the second season were released on December 17, 2018.

The third season tells for the first time about the emotional world of the male characters. While the clique around the new main character Matteo prepares for the Abitur, friendships, sex and the first great love confuse them. The first single clip for the third season was released on March 9, 2019.

The fourth season is about Amira Mahmood. For the devout Muslim , religion is the most important thing in life. But when she falls in love for the first time, new questions arise that shake her previous world. The first episode of the fourth season shows the characters' graduation ceremony and was released between June 8th and 14th, 2019. The second episode followed with a one-month break with its first clip on July 27th, 2019.

Another season was announced on December 24, 2019 for summer 2020. On August 10, 2020 it was announced that the season would start on September 20, 2020 with Nora Machwitz as the new main character.

Season 4

The fourth season consists of ten episodes and treats Amira Mahmood as the new main character. The first episode of the fourth season was unusually released over a month before the remaining nine episodes of the season. Due to the character of the real-time narration of the series, this deviation from the otherwise usual weekly publication cycle for the series served to be able to tell the protagonists' graduation ceremony. The symbolic transition between the main characters of season 3 and season 4 also took place.

Reviews

The series generally generated a positive image from the start. Within two years, the series' YouTube account had around 80 million views.

Nora Voit from Zeit Online describes the narrative form of the series using short clips in real time as "radically contemporary" and sees the subtext of the scenes so elegantly embedded that no young person would have to experience the attempt to depict his real life as cringy , i.e. extremely uncomfortable. When in print, adolescents are likely to be Muslim, of color or gay - without being permanently morally illuminated.

The series expert Vanessa Schneider of the youth channel BR Puls thinks that it is good for the series to have broken away from the script of the Norwegian original, because according to director Pola Beck not all the storylines can be transferred one-to-one from Norway to Germany: “Smoking weed is for example Nothing special here in Germany, the young people have access to it. In Norway it's a huge thing that the main character's boyfriend starts smoking weed. It would be ridiculous to say here in Germany: Oh God, my friend smokes! They would say what's going on with you, is that now an educational measure? ”Since a coherent, cross-media series universe is created by simultaneously playing all channels, the production is also particularly demanding compared to normal series.

At Deutschlandfunk Kultur , Yannic Hannebohn wishes that there would have been a series like this when he was at school. Print films the problems of Generation Z and negotiates conflicts such as: “Does he love me?”, “Will I pass the Abitur?” But also zeitgeist, such as: “Is it okay to install the Grindr app, on which gay people can date ? ”,“ What do I do if my best friend is starving to lose a few pounds? ”Working with visual elements and selected pop music also comment on many scenes better than the dialogues of the young people.

At Spiegel Online Elisa von Hof writes that "Druck" did so much right than almost any other German series for young people. "It feels like the story is real," said a comment that was also true. Instead of convulsive "YOLOs" and a bit of "chilling out", the format - always sensitive and differentiated - deals with feminism, sexual and gender identities and racism. The fact that "Druck" traced the world of today's youth so well can be seen in every pop-cultural reference, in every hoodie, in every pair of worn-out vans, in "Bares for Rares", which the characters watch by the way and which is really a hit among teenagers be, and in the wonderful soundtrack. It is terrific that diversity is taken into account in a youth series and that different bodies and origins, religions, milieus and family constellations are shown naturally without always addressing them.
