Skam (Norwegian for “shame”) is a Norwegian television and web series for young people about the everyday life of students at the Hartvig-Nissen School in Oslo . It was produced by NRK P3 and relied on viral marketing on the Internet. The first clip was released online on September 22, 2015, and the first full episode aired on television on September 25. The fourth and final season aired in spring 2017.

Concept and content

The series tells the everyday life of young people at the Hartvig Nissens skole secondary school in Oslo . Each of the four seasons has a different main character (Eva, Noora, Isak and Sana). Viewers were able to follow the characters on social media such as Instagram , Facebook and YouTube and learn more about the plot.

On changing days of the week, short scenes were published in real time via the official website , accompanied by additional content such as chats or e-mails between the main characters. One episode was broadcast weekly on NRK3 as a compilation of the clips released during the week.

Production and broadcast

The idea behind the series was to make the NRK's website more attractive to a younger audience. Julie Andem has worked for NRK since 2007 and was already involved in three series for the children's program NRK Super , which were conceived as fictional video blogs : Sara , Mia and Jenter . Andem has already directed, scripted and edited the latter; she developed the concept together with Ingvill Marie Nyborg . After four successful seasons, NRK P3 finally approached them to develop a similar series for a teenage audience.

In order to prepare the series thoroughly, Andem traveled through Norway for six months, interviewing teenagers about their lives. According to her own statement, she identified a defining element: pressure - which teenagers feel exposed to and which she would like to take away from them with her television series. She did not work with professional actors, but selected the most promising candidates at a casting of 1,200 young people, on the basis of which she then developed the characters for the series. The time was very tight because most actors go to school or have a job. The first storyline Andem developed was the Noora and William relationship (season 2); in order to prepare this story properly, she wrote the season 1 as a prelude to it.

The series was advertised almost entirely through social media, as it was the most likely way for target audiences to discover it on their own initiative, according to executive producer Håkon Moslet. Due to the special concept of real-time publication and the interactivity by integrating social media into the story, for which Mari Magnus is responsible as a web producer, Skam is particularly successful as a web series . The production costs are very low compared to other series produced by NRK; A budget of around NOK 10 million (around € 1.1 million) was sufficient for the second and third season in 2016 .

From the third season it also received attention from abroad, whereupon the NRK was confronted with demands for English subtitles for the videos in the media library, which were already viewable worldwide. However, this was rejected u. a. on the grounds that the licensing of the pieces of music used does not allow marketing abroad. At the same time, action was taken against subtitled videos that were unofficially distributed on the Internet . From January 13, 2017, at pressure from IFPI Norway , NRK also introduced geoblocking for the content in the media library , which means that episodes and videos of the series from abroad can no longer be viewed.

After the Danish broadcaster DR3 began broadcasting the first season in December 2016 and the Swedish television SVT and the Finnish television Yle published it in their online offerings SVT Play and Yle Areena / Arenan (both subtitled), Simon Fuller's production company XIX Entertainment announced for having acquired the rights to the format for North America. In this context, NRK also announced the production of a fourth season of Skam . At the MIPCOM television fair in Cannes in October 2017, it became public that Facebook had bought the rights to the US version for its video platform Facebook Watch . The broadcast began on April 24, 2018 under the name SKAM Austin .

The trailer for the fourth season was released on April 7, 2017, and was released on April 10. It was also announced that the series would end after four seasons. The French broadcaster France 4 has been running another remake of the series called SKAM France since February 2018 . The German adaptation called DRUCK will start in March 2018 on funk , the online media offering from ARD and ZDF . The rights were also sold to the Netherlands , Spain , and Italy . The Aveny-T theater in Copenhagen is developing a play from each of the four seasons, the premiere was on September 15, 2017.

International remakes

There are now seven remakes of the series in seven different countries:

  • In Germany under the name Druck , with four seasons and a 5th season announced for summer 2020
  • In Italy under the name Skam Italia , with four seasons
  • In Belgium under the name WTFock , with 3 seasons so far, but the 4th has been announced.

34 1 You have å henge med oss April 14, 2017 25 min.
Since Isak moves in with Even, Noora can have her old room back. Vilde is happy with Magnus. Eva heard from Chris (Schistad) that William has a new girlfriend in London, which is why she consults with the other girls on how to deal with Noora further. Sana finds herself increasingly in conflict of interest, especially after Vilde organizes a date for the girls with Sana's brother Elias and his friends for the Easter weekend, with the ulterior motive of finding a new friend for Noora; While everyone is enjoying the party on Friday evening, Sana feels slightly ostracized, although she does show interest in the boy Yousef, and at the same time has to skip an appointment with her mother in the mosque.
35 2 Any he is good, any for ikke has April 21, 2017 18 min.
Sana is irritated by Noora's sudden interest in Yousef; this indicates for the first time that her return from London was not only due to the fact that William had too little time for her because of his job. Meanwhile, Yousef contacts Sana via Facebook. When she looks through his photos with interest in class, Isak is surprised to recognize Mikael, Evens' former classmate, whom he saw in the video interview. Sana refuses to explain the connection to Isak. The girls suddenly received an offer for a Russebuss , a party bus for the Russian celebrations at the end of their school days, at a price of NOK 300,000. While Noora thinks it's way too expensive, Vilde and Sana are very interested. Since a second group around Ingrid and Sara are also present during the tour of the bus and offer 310,000 NOK, Sana angrily outbids them with 320,000 NOK and promises her friends to get the money.
36 3 Hva mener du om drikking? April 28, 2017 28 min.
After the girls have been awarded the Russian bus, Ingrid and Sara ask Sana whether the two groups could join forces. Sana accepts, on condition that the others pay for everything and that she becomes the group leader herself. Your friends are not very enthusiastic at first, but they let themselves be convinced. A first joint meeting of the new 25-person group is announced for Friday, which will take place at Sana's home. Meanwhile, Even, who appears to be well acquainted with Sana's family, is concerned that Sana and Isak had been talking about Mikael, but she calms him down. At the group meeting on Friday, Sana tries to inculcate the others to concentrate more on the concept (in order to have a chance at the end of the award for “Concept of the Year”). After the meeting, the other girls celebrate in Sana's apartment; when her parents suddenly return, she hurries with the help of her brother and his friends to quickly throw out all the girls and make all the bottles and cans disappear. Still, her father finds a bottle of vodka . Yousef then steps in and explains that the bottle is from him. When Sana thanked him later, relieved, he made it clear that he had no problems with it, as he was not religious.
37 4th Allah hadde digget deg 5th May 2017 30 min.
Sana finally learns from Noora the real reason for her return from London: Noora should have testified in court for the trial of William's brother Niko; although she came to Norway especially, she couldn't bring herself to do it at the last moment and returned to London without having achieved anything, but lied to William. As a result, Niko was acquitted and William was seriously disappointed; Although he showed understanding for Noora's behavior, he increasingly withdrew from her until she could no longer stand the situation and left without explanation. Sana tries to help her friend get over William while trying to forget about Yousef herself. On Friday evening, however, he calls her because her brother Elias is drunk with him and cannot go home because alcohol is forbidden in their religious household. They quarter Elias with Noora and when Yousef accompanies Sana home, the two get closer again. Yousef explains why he's not religious: In Elvebakken Even was part of his group of friends; However, when he tried to kiss Mikael, he was turned away on religious grounds and fell into a brief religious madness, which eventually led to his suicide attempt. For this reason, Yousef distanced himself from religion. Nevertheless, he and Sana show understanding for one another.
38 5 Hvis you he is sad he is sad May 12, 2017 27 min.
Sana's mother has grown suspicious after seeing her with Yousef. Elias also hears about it and tries to convince Sana that Yousef actually has all the positive qualities of a Muslim and that she shouldn't reject him for religious reasons. Meanwhile, when organizing the Russebuss group, Sana suspects that Sara wants to betray her and expel her from the bus. This is not confirmed, however, and everyone agrees to meet on Friday evening for a party to which Sana also invites Elias and his friends. At the party, Noora learns by chance that William has a new girlfriend, whereupon she gets very angry with Sana for not telling her about it. When Elias and his friends meet Even, Isak and the other boys, there is a heated argument in which Isak is injured in the nose; only after Sana's intervention does Elias disappear again. Then she can overhear a conversation in the toilet between two girls from the Russebuss group who blame Elias' apparently homophobic action on Islam and who is relieved that Sara excluded Sana when signing the contract for the bus and made Vilde the new boss have. Sana leaves the toilet under the impression of what she has heard and then has to watch a kiss between Yousef and Noora.
39 6th Har you en dårlig dag? May 26, 2017 31 min.
Sana is increasingly withdrawing from her friends and classmates. The others are surprised when she announces that she is getting off the Russian bus; this makes Sara the boss again. Noora tries several times to get into conversation with Sana and announces that she doesn't even join the bus. However, Sana continues to be closed, also avoids contact with Yousef, and instead tries to get closer to her Muslim friend Jamilla, with whom she had broken up in a dispute the previous year, but who was a great help to her when she dealt with discrimination and Bullying at school was faced. In addition, she has to prepare for a biology exam. When Isak asks her for help with exam preparation, she initially refuses him; when he casually mentions that Sara's behavior towards Vilde is totally "fake" because she really doesn't like her at all, she finally agrees. In doing so, she manages to secretly photograph Isak's chat with Sara (who was his girlfriend for a short time), in which she talked about Vilde and other girls from her environment.
40 7th Vi må stå together 2nd June 2017 37 min.
Although Yousef is still clearly interested in Sana, she learns that he is now apparently actually dating Noora. Meanwhile, Sana uses the photos from Isak's and Sara's chat history to create an Instagram account, with the aim of ensuring that everyone can see Sara's true nature. However, the action backfires relatively quickly: Although the whole school learns of Sara's unfavorable remarks and she herself is no longer seen for several days, her friends' displeasure is directed against the unknown person behind the account. Vilde is initially suspected. Sana then deletes the account and has a visibly guilty conscience, which her friend Jamilla does not miss either. After a short time, another Instagram account appears in which lies about Vilde are spread. Sana tries to rebut the suspicion, but the girls have already found the alleged real culprit, Isak, who also admitted it. Isak then confronts Sana and explains to her that she too often sees racism where there is none and that she has to rethink how she deals with people. Sana also learns that Isak's argument with Elias did not have any homophobic background, but that it came about because of Isak's jealousy of Mikael.
41 8th The disturbances on the skolen June 9, 2017 36 min.
After Sana has reconciled with her brother, she reveals to Chris for the first time that she is behind the Instagram story. She advises her to keep the whole thing secret from the others, but a little later Sana accidentally sends Eva a message intended for Chris. The others break off contact, apparently shocked by the revelation. Sana finally sends them a lengthy message in which she describes her own dissatisfaction with herself because she is never Muslim enough, Norwegian enough or Moroccan enough, but actually only wants to be with her friends. Sara and the other girls organize a meeting to discuss the future of their planned Russebuss collaboration, but Vilde, Eva, Noora and Chris leave Sana alone at first. Eventually they turn up in an old van that Chris organized for the five of them to replace the Russebuss and greet Sana back in their midst, while at the same time they finally separate from Sara's group. Everyone celebrates reconciled on Friday at Chris Eva's birthday. Sana learns from Noora that between her and Yousef never more than the kiss that went from Noora happened, and that Yousef was only in contact with Noora to make sure what Sana thinks about him. To everyone's surprise, William and Chris (Schistad) finally arrive.
42 9 Live smiler June 16, 2017 48 min.
After William's return, Noora has disappeared without a trace. Sana Eskild worried that it was she who called William back with an e-mail from Noora's account in order to have Noora out of the way as a competitor for Yousef. Eskild congratulates her on what she has done and also advises her that relationships between religious and non-religious people are usually difficult. Sana tries to talk to Yousef, but he evades her and surprisingly announces that she will go to Turkey at the end of the week and spend the summer there. When Noora finally shows up at school together with William, she doesn't blame Sana, but thanks her because she has now cleared everything up with William again. At the same time, she urges Sana to seek more contact with Yousef. After talking to her mother about the importance of religion in a relationship, Sana initially cancels a meeting with Yousef, but at the last moment decides to see him on the last evening before his departure. The two of them roam Oslo and eat iftar together , while they talk about trust, the position of religion and the (in) equality of people. They finally say goodbye with a hug.
43 10 Takk for alt June 24, 2017 59 min.
Sana invites all friends and acquaintances to the festival of breaking the fast on Saturday at her home. During the week, they prepare for the festival in different ways. Vilde has to take care of renting her apartment because her mother is apparently unable to do so due to her alcohol problem . She receives support from Chris (Berg), who in turn takes courage from the school doctor. Together with Eva and Noora, the girls are also thinking of a present for Sana. William helps Noora write a speech for the festival while at the same time rebelling his father, who asks him to return to London. Chris (Schistad) tries to deepen the relationship with Eva and asks Jonas for advice. This has meanwhile started something with Isak's ex-girlfriend Emma. Eskild and especially Linn are sad that Noora will probably move out again because of William, but they comfort each other. Everyone celebrates Isak's birthday on Wednesday, although Even is overly concerned and especially encouraged by Chris (Berg). Everyone comes to Sana for the celebration on Saturday, Sara and the other girls from the Russebuss group are also invited. Inspired by the Moroccan food, Isak and Even are planning a trip to Marrakech . Eskild and Linn are reassured by Noora that she will certainly not move out for the time being, and subsequently make up a little with William. After Chris (Schistad) and Emma unexpectedly get closer, Jonas and Eva get together again. Sana receives a photo from Turkey from Yousef, and finally Jonas gives the speech prepared by Noora. Similar to the opening scene of the first season, it deals with big questions about politics and society; in addition, comments from viewers are faded in at last, breaking through the fourth wall . Jonas' final sentence is: Frykt sprer seg. Men: Det gjør heldigvis kjærlighet også. ("Fear spreads. But: luckily also love.")

reception

The first episode of the series was one of the most-watched series episodes of all time in the NRK media library. In the first week of June 2016, streaming Skam accounted for over half of the total traffic in the NRK media library. The series is now Norway's most successful web series of all time, with an average of 1.2 million visitors to the website and over a million viewers for the weekly episodes in streaming. While the first season reached an average of 154,000 viewers, the second had already 531,000 and the third 789,000.

In January 2017, with a total of over 22 million views, the series became the most-watched series of all time in the media library of the Swedish television company SVT, SVT Play . The first episode is the most viewed section of the series, with 1.4 million views.

The series received good reviews and praise for addressing important issues such as sexual abuse . Martine Lunder Brenne von Verdens Gang called Skam “Norway's coolest series” in November 2016, mainly because of the way it dealt with homosexuality in the third season. Kristoffer Hegnsvad von Politiken even spoke of the “best youth series in the world”, which appeals to its target group very well, but is at the same time universal and suitable for all ages. In the first season he found a “clichéd” combination of romance and intrigue, which is however presented with a wink and a grain of truth. The camera moves between advertising aesthetics, skating video and a documentary thriller style, in which no monsters, but failing friendship, infidelity or social exclusion create a fearful mood; the use of smartphone screens in the picture, which is reminiscent of House of Cards , interacts with this . Well-written dialogues would be appropriately accompanied by sounds and music. Hegnsvad particularly praised the choice of music used, which was "superior" and on a par with Sofia Coppola and Xavier Dolan .

The series was recommended on Gaytimes.co.uk and praised it as "much more realistic" than Hollywood stories; the characters are "nice but awkward and absolutely believable". Rachel Donadio described it on Nytimes.com as "daring, emotional and lifelike", praising the cross-platform format and the "clever social media strategy". Several comparisons were made with the British series Skins - Hautnah , but the clear differences were also highlighted and Skam was described as the “more down-to-earth” version of that series. Sarah Hughes from the Guardian emphasized, for example, that young people are not only shown at parties, but to a large extent in unspectacular everyday scenes. Trey Taylor wrote on DazedDigital that the series may not be perfect, but "ruthlessly honest," and that it brings prejudice to the ground.

The free newspaper NATT & DAG voted Skam the best series of 2015.

From autumn 2017, the University of Oslo will offer the media science course Digital fortelling - webserien Skam about digital storytelling and the aesthetics of web series. In addition, Dag Øistein Endsjø will offer the religious studies seminar Religion i Skam in the same semester .
