The Hartvig-Nissen-Schule ( Norwegian Hartvig Nissens skole ), colloquially known as Nissen , is a Norwegian grammar school (age group 16 to 19) on Frogner in Oslo's Westend. It is the second oldest grammar school in Oslo and is considered one of the most prestigious grammar schools in the country.

history

It was founded in 1849 by Hartvig Nissen as the Nissen girls 'school ( Nissens Pigeskole , from 1907 to 1963 Nissens Pikeskole ) and was a private girls' school until 1918/1919, which included elementary school, later also middle school / secondary school and grammar school, and mainly the training of the Served daughters of the upper bourgeoisie. From 1861 to 1917 the school also had its own pedagogical college for women. Realschule, grammar school and college were the first of their kind in Norway to allow women. The school and its owners played a key role in promoting women's education in Norway in the 19th and early 20th centuries.

The school was taken over by the city of Oslo in 1918/1919. Boys have been admitted to school since 1955, and the Nissen Girls School was renamed Hartvig Nissen School in 1963.
