You Am

Du Bin ( Chinese  杜 斌 , Pinyin Dù Bīn ; * 1972 ) is a Chinese journalist , photographer , and documentary filmmaker .

Live and act

Du Bin is originally from Tancheng , Shandong and lives in Beijing . After self-taught training, you worked as a freelance photographer for The New York Times since 2011 and also supplied the International Herald Tribune , Time Magazine and The Guardian .

Famous works

You wrote the first biography about the artist Ai Weiwei , called God Ai (艾 神).

In 2013, he published Above the Ghosts' Head: The Women of Masanjia Labor Camp (小鬼 頭上 的 女人), a documentary about torture practices in the Masanjia labor camp in China . The film was banned in the People's Republic of China, but was shown at least in Hong Kong and Taiwan and later made available online.

He also published a 600-page book about the Tian'anmen massacre (天安門 屠殺). The book, which brings together a number of previously published accounts of the Tian'anmen incident, was published by Mirror Books in late May.

Detention

On June 1, 2013, soon after the Masanjia book and film were published, Du Bin was arrested by secret police in Beijing. Friends say they found two unsigned police orders at his home for “disturbing public order”. Under Chinese administrative law, the police can detain him for up to 15 days; then he must either be released, sent to a re-education camp or officially charged. On June 18, Du was still being held at the Fengtai District Detention Center; his sister says the family has not been formally informed of the detention to date. Amnesty International and Reporters Without Borders demand his release.
